HAYWARD, Calif. — With a 4-3 victory on Sunday, the San Francisco State baseball team took the season series from Cal State East Bay.
Jacob Lopez led the game off with a walk and stole second. He scored easily after
Jackson Kritsch singled and both players advanced on an error in the field. Two batters later,
Jordan Abernathy made it a 2-0 game with his single through the left side. The Pioneers scored an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning and tied the game in the fifth. Colt Parshall reached on a leadoff walk, advanced on a second bunt, and later scored on Michael Thomas' two-out single.
The Pioneers failed to get the shutdown inning they were looking for and the Gators regained the lead for good in the sixth. Andrew Fernandez's (3-1) first pitch of the inning hit
Bryce Brooks. Brooks moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and came home on Nicholson's triple to right center. Nicholson scored on
Jack Harris' sac fly, which would later prove to be a crucial insurance run. An error led to a Pioneers run in the eighth but
Brent Montgomery,
Nathan Pisciotta, and
Cole Lang combined for the final four outs.
Garrett Ciuk made the start and lasted two and two thirds innings. He allowed three hits, recorded a strikeout, and allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the first.
Andrew Najeeb-Brush worked out of relief and tossed four and two thirds innings. He picked up his third win of the season and was charged with two runs, only one of which was earned. Lang earned his first career save with a strikeout to the only batter he faced.
