SB | Gators Sweep Hawks In Season Finale

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State softball team wrapped up its 2017 campaign in spectacular fashion on Friday afternoon.  On a gorgeous day at the SFSU Softball Field, the Gators defeated Holy Names 9-0 in five innings in game one before rallying back to take the nightcap 4-3 to end the season on a two-game winning streak.

In the bottom of the first in the opener, SF State's (21-31) offense went to work quickly.  Aryn Guzman led off the inning with a single up the middle, she moved to second when Celeste Adriano reached on an error by the Hawks' second baseman.  With two outs, Gabby Reta got the clutch hit, slapping a ball into shallow right field that allowed Guzman to score from second.

In the bottom of the third the Gators struck again.  With Sara Higa on first, Reta once again did the damage, smashing a ball over the left fielder's head for a double, scoring Higa all the way from first.

Holy Names (5-40) could not solve the riddle of Megan Clark (12-18) in the opener.  The Gator's senior lefty was masterful, scattering two hits over five innings.  At one point in the game, Clark retired 11 in a row.

The Gators on the other hand, scored three runs in the fourth to end the day for HNU's starter Cassidy Clavelle (1-13), who lasted just 3.2 innings, surrendering seven hits, five runs, three earned, with a walk and two strike outs.  Game one ended in the home half of the fifth when pinch-hitter Angelica Terrel cleared the bases with a double to right field, scoring three.

Seven different Gators recorded a hit in the opener, with Adriano and Reta collecting a pair of hits each.  Reta also drove in a pair.

In the second game the Hawks finally got to Clark, scoring pair of runs in the top of the second.  The later of the first two runs came with the help of the Gators defense who kicked the ball around, allowing a runner to score from first on.

SF State evened things up in the second inning.  Sara Higa led off the inning with a base hit and scored all the way from first on Reta's second double of the afternoon.  Heads up base running by Reta plated the Gator's second run of the inning.  She took third on the ground out by Clark and stole home between batters when no one covered the plate and the pitcher turned her back to Reta.

In the top of the fourth, with Clark running low on gas, the Hawks scored again.  A leadoff double and back-to-back sacrifice bunts plated the Hawks go-ahead run.

HNU's starter Anekailia Crevani (1-10) kept the Gator's bats silent in the fourth, but could not shut the Gators down completely.  SF State scored twice in the fifth to take the lead, giving Clark the lead who pitched a quick inning in the top of the fifth.

Kasie Trezona led off the bottom of the Gator's big fifth inning with a single to center field.  She advanced to second on a throwing error by the catcher who attempted to pick Trezona off at first.  The Gator's shortstop moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and came in to score on a single by Madison Collins. Thanks to a pair of errors, Collins scored on the ground ball to second by Alexis Mattos to give the Gator's the lead for good.

Guzman took the ball for the Gators in the top of the sixth and closed it out for the Gators, earning her first save of the season.  She went two complete, and pitched around one walk.  Clark got the win going 5.0 complete, scattering eight hits, three runs, two earned with a walk.

Higa went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the finale.  Reta finished the day with a pair of doubles giving her nine on the year, tied for the team lead with fellow senior Guzman.

Alexis Konstantino went 1-for-1 with a run scored in her final at bat as a Gator, Clark had a rough day at the plate going 0-for-5, but she still finished tops on the team with a .357 batting average and lead the Gators with 51 hits.  Kasie Trezona went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
