SAN FRANCISCO —
Ranier Plantinos and Johnny Villeda powered the San Francisco State men's soccer team as it topped Cal State East Bay 2-1 on Friday in CCAA action.
"We played good tactical soccer and put two away in the first half," said Head Coach
Javier Ayala-Hil. "We could have had a couple more in the second half but at the end of the day we preserved the lead and got the result."
A foul just outside the top of the box in the 13th minute set up a good opportunity for the Gators (6-1-1/1-1-1 CCAA) but
Aydan Bowers's free kick was saved by a diving Omar Cornoel.
In the 16th minute, the Gators pushed the ball upfield only to have the play broken up by a hand ball.
Tariq Pulskamp's free kick was saved and Myles Burditt's outback was also saved as Coronel got a foot in front for the save.
Plantinos scored his team-leading eighth goal in the 22nd minute. Freshman
Feliciano Cardenas chipped the ball into the box, where Plantinos trapped it in front of the keeper and finished to his left to give SF State the early lead.
Villeda's goal in the 41st minute came off the putback from a
Carlos Trujeque leal shot that slammed off the left post. A wide open Villeda reeled back and finished to the near post.
Cal State East Bay (2-4-3/0-3-2 CCAA) threatened early in the second half. In the 53rd minute with a pair of corner kicks but Maciel Maximiliano managed to clear out the second attempt. A
Richard Leon handball in the 56th minute setup a free kick from the top of the box but Evan Sanchez's cross was broken up.
The Pioneers came up with a goal in the 74th minute. Two Gators defender converged on the ball and goalkeeper
Kyle Harmina came out to make the stop but instead the ball bounced around and Jared Johnson put it into the back of the net with the assist from TJ Butler.
