WBB | Comeback Comes up Short in Loss to Toros

SF State falls 83-72 to Cal State Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's basketball team dropped their fifth-straight contest on Friday in an 83-72 loss to host Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Jhaina Stephens scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the year and first of 2018. The 17 boards knots a season-best for a Gator this 2017-18 campaign.

Rachel Iozzia hit a season-high five three-pointers for 15 points, which ties a season best. Courteneay Brown scored 12 while Tyiteyana Jefferson and Jacqueline Moss each scored ten, giving SF State five players in double figures for the first time this season.  The ten triples are the second-most dropped this season for SF State (4-10/2-9 CCAA).

The Gators, who trailed by 23 in the third, brought it to five in the fourth quarter but couldn't complete the comeback in their tenth loss of the season.

Stephens scored the first two Gator baskets and later made an excellent pass to Erika Nilsen who finished and tied things at six-all. Midway through the period Jefferson knocked down a jumper to once again tie the contest, and Nilsen regained the lead two possessions later on a layup to put SF State up 14-12. The Toros' Zhane Carter hit the game's first triple to put the hosts back up with two minutes left in the first quarter, however Moss answered from deep off an assist from Kayleigh Pugh. Amani Alexander hit a layup in the closing seconds to give SF State a 19-17 lead at the break.

Dominguez Hills (8-8/6-5 CCAA) came out to take a 29-21 lead following a Taylor Ferris layup with six left in the half before Jefferson hit a layup of her own to end the Toro surge. The Toros then pushed their lead to 14 as Holmes dropped two from beyond the arc, making it 37-23. Nilsen hit a layup out of the timeout but Nautica Morrow hit a three to put the Toros up by 15. The Gators continued to pressure with Jefferson, Stephens and Moss all hitting buckets as the half came to a close with the Gators down 47-31.

Nilsen opened up the second half with a corner triple off a nice dish from Iozzia. Stephens hit double-digits on a jumper with 6:18 left in the third for her third-straight game in double figures. Iozzia got her first points of the evening from deep, but Morrow answered with her own triple to give Dominguez Hills a 57-39 advantage. Brown converted a three in the final minute of the period, narrowing the deficit 65-49 going into the final quarter.

Iozzia and Moss hit back-to-back triples to start the fourth and cut it to ten. Another Iozzia three cut the Toro lead to just seven, and Stephens drove in for a layup to make the score 69-64. Holmes made a three the next Toro possession and, after another Dominguez Hills basket, Brown converted from deep to cut it to seven with 3:49 to go. The Toros went on to hit a pair of layups as they went back up by ten with under a minute to go to seal the victory and snap their losing streak.
