TURLOCK, Calif. –
Rachel Iozzia hit five three-pointers and
Jhaina Stephens notched her eighth double-double of the season as the San Francisco State women's basketball team defeated host Stanislaus State 69-61 on Saturday.
"I'm extremely proud of this group of six for playing with great poise under Stanislaus' full-court pressure tonight," said Head Coach
Kristina Danella. "We made big shots when we needed them and got big stops down the stretch. I thought we did a great job of sticking with our game plan and not getting frazzled at all. This group has faced a lot of adversities and has continued to fight through everything that's been thrown at them. Obviously a road win is always great, especially when it involves beating last year's win total."
Iozzia had a career-high 17 points on five triples, while Stephens poured in 18 and grabbed 14 rebounds.
Kaleigh Pugh notched a career-high 11 points in the start.
Erika Nilsen dropped nine on three from deep and
Amani Alexander added eight.
Tyiteyana Jefferson grabbed a season-high 11 boards.
SF State (5-13/3-12 CCAA) shot 46 percent (26-of-57) from the field in their third-best shooting performance of the season. The Gators were lights out from deep, hitting nine triples on the night.
The Gators bounced back after trailing 8-4 to score the next four points behind two Stephens' buckets.
Amani Alexander gave SF State its first lead of the day on a layup at the 3:18 mark. The Gators wrapped up the first quarter on a 4-0 run capped off by another Alexander layup off a dish from Iozzia to take a 14-12 lead.
SF State pushed the lead to 21-15 behind back-to-back buckets from Pugh in the second quarter. The Warriors (8-12/5-9 CCAA) then went on to take a 22-21 lead off a Caitlin Keding triple, part of a 7-0 run for the hosts. With 3:31 left in the half, Iozzia drained a three off an assist from Stephens to push the advantage to 31-26, and the Gators continued the sharp shooting to carry a 35-21 lead into the half.
Pugh opened up the second half with another basket, and Iozzia drained another triple to make it a six-point lead. Erika Larsen hit a layup with just under seven to go in the period to cut it to two, but Stephens hit a tough layup in the lain to put the Gators up 42-38. Stanislaus continued to battle back and a Lizzy Alexander three-pointer in the final minute cut the deficit to 49-46.
Nilsen drained one from beyond the arc to start the fourth, and Iozzia hit her fifth triple of the night with 5:31 to go in regulation as the Gators led 55-50. The Gators got clutch free throws down the stretch by Jefferson, Iozzia and Stephens to seal the key road win and snap the losing streak.
