WBB | Gators Fall to Sharp-Shooting Broncos, 76-57

Iozzia drops 15 with a season-high four three-pointers on Friday night

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's basketball team dropped their third-straight contest on Friday night, falling 76-57 to visiting Cal Poly Pomona.

Jhaina Stephens dropped 18 points and added six rebounds, which is the seventh time this season she led the Gators in the point column. Rachel Iozzia scored 15 behind 50 percent (4-of-8) from beyond the arc, which are the most threes converted this season for the grad student. Kaleigh Pugh added a season-high six rebounds in the start.

The Gators (4-8/2-7 CCAA) struggled from the line, only shooting 47 percent (9-of-19) which is the second-lowest mark this season, and knocked down 40 percent (21-of-53) from the floor. Meanwhile the Broncos (9-4/6-2 CCAA) were lights out from the field as they shot 52 percent (31-of-62), the highest shooting percentage allowed by the Gators all year.

SF State came out to a 9-2 lead after triples from Courtenay Brown and Iozzia, who had two. The Broncos then knotted the score at 11-all and went on a 10-0 run which Priscilla Brooks capped off with a jumper at the end of the first quarter to put the visitors up 21-11.

Pugh, who saw her first start since Nov. 24, began the second with a layup and Stephens hit a jumper and followed with a layup on the ensuing possessions to cut it to eight as the Gators now only trailed 23-15. Stephens continued her hot quarter as she knocked down another layup off an assist from Jacqueline Moss, and drained a jumper midway through the period to make it 27-21. Pomona then put together a 14-1 run towards the end of the first half before Pugh stopped the bleeding with a layup with 15 seconds left to go in the half down 41-24

Nilsen drained a three off one of Brown's three assists on the night to start the third. Both sides traded baskets before Pomona continued to run away with their fifth-straight victory. In the closing minutes of the quarter, Stephens hit three jumpers in-a-row and followed with a layup to make it 53-40.

The visitors mounted another run to begin the final ten minutes of regulation as Adora Obi hit a triple and Benton knocked down a jumper. The Gators never lost their fight and continued to knock down looks and battle back. Iozzia hit her fourth from deep midway through the period and Tyiteyana Jefferson sunk one from the charity stripe. Jefferson would close out the contest sinking three-straight from the line.
