SEASIDE, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's soccer team fell 1-0 on Friday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
It was just the third loss and third shutout suffered this season by the Golden Gators (7-3-3/4-3-2 CCAA), who are in fourth place in the CCAA with 14 points. With the win, the Otters (6-6-0/4-4-0) added three points to their tally to move into a three-way tie for sixth place. The two teams were fairly balanced in the stat columns. Each team attempted six shots while the Otters placed four on frame compared to the Gators' three. San Francisco State held a 2-1 corner kick advantage.
The Otters took the first shot of the game in the sixth minute, a shot that
Peter Swinkels was there to save. The Gators' first shot of the contest came in the 17th minute on a
Gustav Fink attempt that drifted wide. Ten minutes later,
Aydan Bowers' shot was saved. That resulted in a corner kick but the Gators were unable to take advantage. Neither team threatened over the next 18 minutes.
CSUMB wasted no time in the second half. Walmer Martinez fired a shot in the 48th minute that went wide. Then, a few minutes later, Swinkels made another save. The Otters persisted, however, and Luis Lopez netted the eventual game-winner in the 56th minute. Swinkels punched it out but the Gators were unable to clear the ball and Walmer Martinez was credited with the assist. Martinez had a shot on goal of his own a minjute later that Swinkels saved. Richard Leon's shot in the 69th minute was saved and Brandt Dixon's shot inside the box in the 81st minute sailed high.
