SAN FRANCISCO — For the first time since 2000, the San Francisco State women's soccer team beat Stanislaus State. A second-half goal snapped the losing streak and brought the Gators one step closer to the postseason with Friday's 1-0 win at Cox Stadium.
The Golden Gators (8-5-2/6-3-2 CCAA) became the fourth CCAA team to reach the 20-point plateau and virtually ended the playoff hopes for the Warriors (7-6-3/3-5-2 CCAA), who will now need to win their final two matches and see Cal State LA record no more than two points over the Golden Eagles' final four contests. Cal State San Bernardino, who led Cal State East Bay 2-1 at halftime, would need to win its final four contests plus a Gators loss, and Cal State Monterey Bay would need to win its final three matches and a Gators loss to tie in the points standings.
Summer Langsam's shot from the circle in the 41st minute went just high of the crossbar. A Warriors foul in the 43rd minute outside the top of the box set up a Gators free kick and
Janessa Staab played it on the ground but it trickled wide left. With 18 seconds to go in the half, Staab attempted another free kick closer to midfield but goalkeeper Haley Crook was there for the save.
The Gators kept the ball at their end for much of the early half but a couple of offside calls negated scoring opportunities. A yellow card in the 56th minute on the left edge of the box set up a free kick for the Gators but that was cleared away by the Warriors defense. In the 72nd minute, Madison Messier headed a ball back to Tami Kwong, who settled it on the left side, penetrated into the box, dribbled through traffic and stayed with it as she sliced across the face of the goal to score her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The Warriors put the pressure on late and had a couple of shots blocked before finally misplaying a pass out of bounds to ease the pressure with 3:15 to go. Goalkeeper
Nicki Rucki made three saves to record her eighth shutout of the season.
