MSOC | Gators Fall in First Round of CCAA Championships

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's soccer team allowed an early goal and could never catch up in a 2-0 CCAA Championships First Round loss at Cal State San Bernardin on Tuesday.

The Golden Gators (10-4-3), who earned the No. 5 seed, faced the No. 4 Coyotes (12-5-1), who bested the Gators 1-0 earlier in the season. On Tuesday, the Gators gave up a pair of goals for just the second time all year. San Francisco State goalkeeper Peter Swinkels entered play with an .892 saves percentage, which was best in all of NCAA Division II. The two goals slide Swinkels to an .868 save percentage, which is still top five in the country — two other CCAA players, Cal State LA's Alex Brems and Chico State's Damion Lewis , also rank in the top five.

San Francisco State is currently ranked No. 7 in the West Region so the Gators are on the outside looking in and will have to see how the rest of the region shapes up.

Second Half

In the 63rd minute, Danny Ortiz added an insurance goal when he took a turnover the other direction and beat Swinkels 1v1 to the lower right. The Gators pressured the Coyotes defense with 10 second-half shots but none in the second half were on goal. Aydan Bowers had a couple of free kick opportunities that went high and Richard Leon's shot with 11 minutes to go went wide left across the face of the net.

Quotables
Head Coah Javier Ayala-Hil: "It was a very tough loss today. We've had a fantastic season. To be matched up to Cal State San Bernardino on the road isn't an easy goal. We let up an early goal and it's tough to be able to stay composed and stick to the game plan when you're behind. We gave up a goal in the second half and it was difficult to break down a team that's done so well defensively."
