SAN FRANCISCO — Tami Kwong's early goal gave the San Francisco State women's soccer team a 1-0 edge over visiting Cal State San Marcos on Friday in CCAA action.
The Gators (6-4-1/4-2-1 CCAA) dominated early, placing five of their seven first-half shots on goal, including Kwong's game-winner. The Cougars (5-5-1/4-2-0 CCAA) dominated the second half but had nothing to show for it.
San Francisco State was dominant in the first half and
Tami Kwong got the Golden Gators on the scoreboard in the 7th minute. The sophomore netted her third goal of the season with a 1v1 from point blank on the right side that she finished to the far post. The Cougars' only shot of the half came in the 32nd minute and was saved by
Nicki Rucki. With a minute to go left in the half,
Janessa Staab played a fantastic free ball from near the midfield into the box that
Emily Kaleal connected with for a header but the ball went wide left.
The Gators were limited to one shot in the second half that came in the 89th minute and relied heavily on their defense as the Cougars launched eight second-half shots. Back-to-back corner kicks gave the Cougars an opportunity in the 68th minute, and the second resulted in a header saved by Rucki. A Cougars free kick from outside the box in the 88th minute was smothered by Rucki to secure her sixth shutout of the year.
