GOLDEN, Colo. — The San Francisco State men's wrestling team began its RMAC schedule with a pair of losses, a 23-20 loss to No. 13 Chadron State and a 32-6 loss to host Colorado Mines, on Friday at Volk Gymnasium.
The Gators held their own with the nationally-ranked Eagles. At 125 pounds,
Brandon Vu, who made his debut in the NWCA National Rankings at No. 9 this week, wasted no time recording a fall in 1:26 over Clayton Eagle. At 133 pounds, No. 10
Jordan Gurrola followed suit with a 6-0 victory. The Eagles took the 141 and 149 bouts, though 149-pounder
Isiah Alva held his own in a 6-4 decision to No. 5 Chase Clasen that went down to the final seconds. At 165 pounds,
Maxamillian Schneider grabbed an 8-0 lead by the end of the first period. That gave the Gators a 14-12 lead. At 174 pounds,
Kurtis Clem extended the Gators lead. Clem tied his bout 3-3 towards the end of the second period, then took a 4-3 advantage to begin the third period thanks to an escape. Mat Hebel scored a two-point takedown with a half minute left but Hebel was whistled for a costly two-point violation which gave Clem the lead for good with 14 seconds remaining.
Justin Pichedwatana extended the Gators' lead to 20-12 with a decision at 184 pounds but the Gators faced an uphill battle versus two nationally-ranked opponents in the final two weight classes.
In the nightcap, the Gators fell behind early and never recovered as the Orediggers swept the first seven weight classes. Vu suffered a 9-7 loss and Gurrola dropped a heartbreaker in triple overtime, 5-4, to No. 7 ranked Noah Au-Yeung. The Gators also forfeited the 165 pound matchup. Pichedwatana made it a 2-0 day for himself with a 9-7 decision over Connor Ventura, then
Andrew Herrera picked up his second win of the season with a 10-8 decision. Heavyweight Brandon Saunders recorded a fall for CSM to make it a 32-6 final.

Head Coach Jason Welch: "The guys wrestled tough. We know what we need to work on, and are ready to execute. I'm confident we will be ready for our next RMAC competition."
The Golden Gators will wrestle their only match of the month on December 15 at Southern Oregon (NAIA).
