SAN FRANCISCO – A strong first quarter was not enough for the San Francisco State women's basketball team as they fell to visiting Sonoma State, 77-57 on Saturday night.
Tyiteyana Jefferson scored a season-high 21 points off a season-best three triples to lead all scorers.
Kaleigh Pugh added ten for her third double-digit scoring performance of the season.
Rachel Iozzia dropped nine and had a game-high eight assists,
Erika Nilsen posted eight points, and
Jhaina Stephens scored seven and had five boards.
Nilsen drained a three to open up the scoring. The Gators (5-16/3-15 CCAA) put together a 9-0 run midway through the period, with Jefferson hitting a pair of threes, to go up 16-8 at the three-minute mark. Jessica Mitz's jumper tied it at 17-all late in the first, and Jefferson knocked down a pair from the charity stripe to give SF State a 19-17 lead after one.
The Seawolves (10-12/7-11 CCAA) began the second quarter with three-quick points before Jefferson knocked down another free throw to tie it 20-20. Iozzia hit a triple off an assist from Nilsen to put the Gators up 26-24, and, following a Serena Santos three-pointer, Stephens dropped a jumper to put the hosts back up by one. Sonoma State created some distance late with back-to-back jumpers by Jerrica Crosby to go up 35-30 at the half.
Another Iozzia three brought the Gators to within one, however the Seawolves went on a 14-0 run to go up 54-41 before Stephens hit a bucket to stop the bleeding in the third. Down 64-44 to start the fourth, Pugh hit a nice layup in the lane off an inbound pass from
Amani Alexander. Sonoma State then put together another run of seven points to go up 69-46, but the Gators bounced back to score the next six with Pugh hitting a layup, Iozzia converting from the line and Jefferson adding another three. SF State would end the contest with three-straight free throws, including a pair from Iozzia in the closing minute.
