SB | Gators Defeat Coyotes in Home Opener

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State softball team opened up home action with a victory over Cal State San Bernardino 5-3 on Friday. Game two of the day was postponed in the tenth inning tied 10-10 due to darkness, and will be concluded at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Lindsey Cassidy led off the game striking out Morgan Ratliff for one of her season-high six strikeouts on the day.  Andrea Hildan started the offense for the Gators (5-5/4-1 CCAA) in the bottom half with a single down the third base line and advanced to second on Hayley Nunes' sacrifice bunt. Hildan stole third, and came around on Michelle Castro's single to right for the early 1-0 lead.

San Bernardino (5-5/0-5 CCAA) got three in the top of the third on a bases-clearing single to left off the bat of Dominique Walker. SF State got one back in the bottom half to make it 3-2. Nunes got her second hit of the afternoon on a single to center field which scored Hildan after she reached on a double to left.

Nunes ended the top of the fifth on a fantastic diving catch in foul territory, and tied it 3-3 in the bottom half on another single which scored Madison Collins. In the bottom of the sixth, Sara Higa led off reaching on an error and advanced to second on Katie Rohrer's sacrifice bunt. Following Mallory Cleveland reaching on an error, Kylee Brown knocked a double to right field to score Higa and Cleveland, putting the Gators up 5-3. Cassidy got Taylor Ancona to fly out to left to end the game and seal the home opening victory.

Cassidy and the Gators allowed a season-low three hits in game one and had their second errorless game of the year.

In game two, Castro singled with two down to center field and stole second to give SF State a runner in scoring position in the first. Higa came up and hit a towering shot down the left field line that just stayed inside of the foul pole for the two-run home run.

The Coyotes rallied in the second to post five runs on five hits, capped off by Ashley Leffingwell's double to left, to take a 5-2 advantage.  SF State answered with a three-run third, starting with Castro's single and Hildan's triple to left. Nunes followed with a single to right to plate Hildan, and Katie Rohrer singled home Castro two batters later to tie it 5-5.

The Gators took the lead in the fourth as Collins reached with two outs on a hit-by-pitch, stole second, and came around to score on Hildan's single to right. San Bernardino notched another five-run frame in the fifth, giving them a 10-6 lead.

Nunes led off the bottom of the fifth with a single up the middle, and Castro followed with a single to left. Higa plated Nunes on her single to center field, cutting the deficit to three. Higa came around to score two batters later, making it 10-8.

SF State tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Higa and Rohrer walked and Cleveland advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt. This brought up Brown who whacked a double to left which tied it 10-10. Karla Soto tossed five innings in relief, allowing just three earned.
