POMONA, Calif. – A strong first half was not enough for the San Francisco State women's basketball team on Saturday as the Gators wrapped up road action with a 68-63 loss to Cal Poly Pomona.
Amani Alexander led the Gators in scoring with 19 points, besting her previous season high that she set a day ago, and
Jhaina Stephens recorded her tenth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 boards.
Rachel Iozzia dropped 16 on four three-pointers.
Erika Nilsen scored six and
Kaleigh Pugh notched five in the effort.
It is the 12
th time this season the Gators (5-18/3-17 CCAA) have held their opponent to under 69 points, due in part to SF State limiting Cal Poly Pomona (18-8/15-6 CCAA) to 22 percent (4-of-19) from beyond the arc.
The Gators opened up with six-straight points, with Stephens logging four points in the process. Alexander and Iozzia both hit triples to put SF State up 14-8. The Broncos then went on an 8-0 run to take a 19-18 lead less than a minute into the second quarter.
Alexander hit a free throw to push the lead to four at 24-20 with just over seven minutes left in the half. SF State continued to roll with three-straight free throws by Pugh to go up 33-25. The Gators would utilize an 18-point quarter to take a 36-30 lead into the half.
Stephens hit a jumper to open the third to put the Gators up seven, prompting a run to put SF State up 45-33 that was capped off by a Nilsen triple. Both sides traded baskets, with Alexander hitting a jumper off a dish from Nilsen with three left in the period to make it 48-39.
The Broncos put together a 10-0 run to go up 55-50 to start the fourth, with Chelsea Waddy-Blow hitting a pair from the charity stripe before Iozza ended the streak with a three-pointer to cut it to two. Cal Poly Pomona continued to put the game away as Casey McWilliam hit a triple to put the Broncos up seven, and converting a pair of free throws in the closing minute to seal the win.
