SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State softball team fell to visiting Academy of Art in a Friday doubleheader 4-2, 3-2 to wrap up the eight-game home stand.
The Urban Knights (10-6) took a 1-0 lead in the first of game one as Brenna Mitchell hit her first home run of the season to left-center field.
Lindsey Cassidy got both Alyssa Brundage and Dominique Seva'aetasi out swinging to start the third, two of her five strikeouts on the day.
SF State (7-10) got on the board in the fifth with
Mallory Cleveland leading off the frame with a single up the middle for the first Gator hit in the contest. She was sacrificed to second and went to third on
Angelica Terrel's infield single.
Madison Collins plated the senior on a perfectly placed bunt to tie things up 1-1. Two batters later,
Andrea Hildan hit in pinch runner
on a sacrifice bunt to give SF State a 2-1 advantage.
Academy of Art tied it up in the top of the sixth on Brooke Larsen's single to right-center that plated Brenna Mitchell. The visitors then took a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh, and retired the Gators in order in the bottom half for the win.
In game two, SF State got out of a jam in the second as the Academy of Art had runners on second and third with just one out.
Katie Rohrer charged the bunt and caught it for the out and immediately fired to third base to double-up the runner to end the top half of the inning. The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on Brenna Mitchell's two-run double down the left field line.
Sam Drucker retired the Urban Knights in order in the fourth, and in the bottom half, Rohrer hit a single to right and came around to score on a throwing error by the second baseman to make it 2-1. The visitors got the run back in the top of the fifth to bring the score to 3-1 on Gabi Hirsch's double to center.
The Gators made it a one-run game in the sixth as
Kylee Brown beat out an infield single which scored
Michelle Castro, who reach on an infield single herself. SF State put a runner on in the seventh, but Cecilia Lopez got Castro to fly out center to end the contest.
