SAN MARCOS, Calif. –
Mallory Cleveland's pair of two-run home runs guided the San Francisco state softball team to a doubleheader sweep of host Cal State San Marcos on Friday by scores of 10-3 and 9-8.
In game one, the Gators (3-4/2-0 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead at the top of the second inning as
Sara Higa led off with a hit-by-pitch and reached third on
Katie Rohrer's double to left. Cleveland brought both runners around on her fielder's choice to give SF State the early advantage.
SF State doubled its lead in the third inning as
Michelle Castro scored on an error by the catcher and Higa came around on Rohrer's sacrifice fly to left to make it 4-0. The Cougars (1-3/0-2 CCAA) got two runs back in the fourth on Janaea Mason's double to right that plated Alliya Machrone and Jaqlyn Newhouser.
In the fifth,
Andrea Hildan led off with a bunt single and came around to score two batters later on Castro's double to left-center. After a stolen base, Castro made it 6-2 as she came across on Higa's single through the right side. The rally continued with Cleveland knocking a two-run shot to center to score pinch-runner
Megan Asher, extending the Gator lead to 8-2.
San Marcos scored one in the top of the fifth on a fielder's choice that plated Sara Langdon, making it 8-3. The Gators got two more insurance runs in the seventh to take a 10-3 lead into the bottom frame.
Hayley Nunes began the scoring by reaching on an error and scoring on Rohrer's single to right-center. Two batters later Cleveland knocked a triple to score Rohrer for her fourth RBI of the day.
Lindsey Cassidy tossed all seven innings in the win, allowing just five hits and striking out one for her first complete game of the season.
Game two saw the Cougars taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning capped off by Newhouser's two-run double. In the top of the second, Rohrer reached on catcher's interference and later scored on a passed ball to make it 3-1. Hildan scored on Higa's sacrifice fly in the top of the third to cut it to one, however San Marcos answered with three in the bottom half to take a 6-2 lead into the fourth inning.
The back-and-forth continued in the top of the fourth as
Kylee Brown scored on a bases-loaded walk by Hildan, and Castro singled home Asher two batters later with the bases loaded to make it 6-4. Higa followed with a single of her own to tie things up at 6-6, plating Hildan and Collins.
The hosts regained the lead in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Newhouser and Machrone to make it 8-6. That lead didn't last long as Cleveland whacked a two-run shot to center to score Rohrer and tie it up 8-8, her second two-run home run of the day.
In the sixth, Rohrer singled and came around on Cleveland's single and a series of Cougar errors to give SF State a 9-8 lead and the eventual victory.
