SAN FRANCISCO –
Jackson Kritsch hit his second homer of the season that gave the San Francisco State baseball team an early lead but No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona scored eight unanswered runs in an 8-2 Gators loss.
Kritsch took the second pitch he saw from Broncos (13-10/10-7 CCAA) starter Ryan Alsworth (4-2) over the left field wall to put the Gators (6-16/6-11 CCAA) up early.
Harley Lopez followed with a single, then raced all the way around to score on
Brady Dorn's double to right field. That's all the Gators would score though. They stranded eight runners, including three who reached third base.
Hernandez (1-4) went seven innings and struck out 11 but saw his ERA raise slightly to 2.54. He began the third inning with a strikeout and induced a groundball to short that was a potential double-play ball but an errant throw turned the play into a fielder's choice and allowed batter Jacob Bernardy to reach second base. The Broncos followed with back-to-back base hits to tie the game. Hernandez ended his day with a strikeout of Nick Peifer but not before allowing a two-out homer down the right field line to cleanup hitter Nic Hernandez.
The Gators only trailed 3-2 when Hernandez departed but the bullpen allowed a five-run ninth that put the game out of touch.
Dorn batted cleanup and went 4-for-4 on the day, which raised his batting average 42 points to a team-high .387. Kritsch went 1-for-3 with a walk and is second on the team with a .372 batting average.
