SAN FRANCISCO — All nine starters contributed to at least one run for the San Francisco State baseball team as the Gators took the series finale on Sunday versus No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona, 9-5, at Maloney Field.
Jeff Piver went seven innings for the Gators en route to his second win of the season. He struck out six and allowed three runs on 107 pitches. The offense took care of the rest.
After a leadoff double led to a run for the Broncos in the top of the second, the Gators answered in the bottom half of the inning.
Johnny Juarez hit a double to the left field wall that scored
Harley Lopez all the way from first, then
Jack Harris gave SF State the lead with an RBI double down the left field line.
Jackson Kritsch and
Damon DeVirgilio recorded back-to-back singles to start the third, then Kritsch scored on what should've been a groundout to short but was instead a throwing error. That allowed DeVirgilio to move up to third, and he scored on a
Trevor Rogers groundout, which grew the lead to 4-1.
In the fourth,
Kyler Crone drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases and Kritsch delivered a two-run single through the left side. Crone raced home on a wild pitch with two outs to make it 7-1.
Cody Martin trimmed the lead to 7-3 with a two-run homer to right center in the fifth. The Broncos loaded the bases up but Piver got out of the jam with a fly ball to center.
Kyler Crone recorded his first career hit in the sixth and Kritsch followed with a single.
Damon DeVirgilio singled home a run and a
Brady Dorn groundout plated another run.
Reliever
Jordyn Eglite surrendered a leadoff home run to Brennan McKenzie in the eighth and
Jack Higgins gave up an unearned run in the ninth.
