SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State softball team only scored one run on eight hits on Saturday as the Gators fell to No. 18 UC San Diego by scores of 6-0 and 7-1.
The Tritons (23-10/16-8 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in the firs on Kelsi Maday's sacrifice fly to right that scored Maddy Lewis. The Gator (15-23/10-13 CCAA) defense was stout in the contest, turning a textbook 6-4-3 double play to end the second. In the top of the third,
Sara Higa made a great diving play to her left and gunned down the Triton hitter to end the frame.
Maday led off the fourth with a solo shot to left to widen the lead 2-0. In the top of the seventh they posted four more to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Meanwhile Robyn Wampler held the Gator bats quiet until the bottom of the seventh as
Kylee Brown broke up the no-hitter and
Angelica Terrel followed with a base hit to left.
Lindsey Cassidy got the start in game one, tossing 6.1 with a strikeout.
Sam Drucker threw the remaining 0.2 of relief, and returned in game two to throw 5.1 in relief after
Karla Soto got the start.
In game two, the visitors plated three in the top of the first on five hits to take a 3-0 advantage. They would add two more in the second on Bobbi Aguiree's two-run single to center, putting the Tritons up 5-0.
SF State got on the board in the fourth as
Katie Rohrer led off by reaching on an error and advanced to third on base hits by Higa and
Mallory Cleveland. Terrel plated Rohrer on a single up the middle.
Drucker, who entered the game in the second, pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth to keep it a four-run game. In the top of the seventh, UC San Diego got some insurance runs as Sharriah Harrington ripped a two-run home run to left, making it 7-1.
Michelle Castro stole another base on Saturday, her 30
th of the season to take sole possession of second place all-time for stolen bases in a season. Monica Rubina currently holds the record with 33 which she set in 1997.
Madison Collins reached base for the 20
th-straight game on Saturday, which is a career high and the longest streak by a Gator this season.
