SEASIDE, Calif. – The San Francisco State softball team wrapped up the series with host Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday, dropping game one of the day 9-7 before coming back to tie game two in the seventh 6-6 before the contest was halted due to darkness.
Game one saw Monterey Bay (11-9/6-5 CCAA) take a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Gators (7-13/4-7 CCAA) answered in the top half of the third to tie it up 1-1.
Madison Collins reached on a hit-by-pitch and came around to score on
Andrea Hildan's single up the middle. The Otters quickly regained the lead on Julia Garcia's three-run home run to center.
Katie Rohrer led off the fourth with a double to center and scored on
Mallory Cleveland's double down the left field line. Pinch hitter
Savannah Ozuna next reached on an infield single that scored Cleveland, and the rally continued two batters later as Collins hit a double to left which scored pinch runner
Jenee Wilson to tie it up once again 4-4.
After the Otters scored another run in the bottom of the fourth, the Gators notched another three-run inning to go up 7-5.
Hayley Nunes led off with a walk and scored from third with the bases loaded on a three-way steal for the first run.
Angelica Terrel came up and hit a single up the middle to score Cleveland and pinch runner
Marielena Torres, giving SF State the advantage.
However, the hosts bounced back once again, tying it up 7-7 on Jayme Stark's two-run single in the fifth and notched a 9-7 lead in the sixth to take game one of the afternoon.
Rohrer, Cleveland, and Collins all recorded two-hit performances.
Karla Soto tossed 2.2 innings in relief with a pair of strikeouts and only allowed one earned.
Alyssa Burt tripled down the left field line to cap off a three-run first inning for the Otters in game two. The hosts would add another in the second to push the lead to four, but the Gators were able to get it back in the third as Cleveland singled home
Sara Higa, making things 4-1.
Michelle Castro, who reached on a double, scored on an error in the fourth. Rohrer reached on a fielder's choice three batters later which plated Hildan. The hosts pushed the lead back up to three on Courtney Henning's two-run double to center.
Cleveland led off the fifth with a solo shot to right-center, and in the seventh the Gators continued to roll. Rohrer reached on an infield single and Cleveland walked. Ozuna advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt, and two batters later Castro knocked a double to right-center to plate Rohrer and Cleveland and knot the score at 6-6. The game was halted in the middle of the seventh, and will be resumed at a later date.
Cleveland went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a pair batted in. Soto went three in relief, allowing no runs and striking out two.
