CHICO, Calif. — The San Francisco State baseball team was unable to salvage the series in a pair of losses, 7-5 and 10-0, in Monday's doubleheader at No. 9 Chico State.
Jeff Piver's start went to waste in game one. The righty struck out seven in six innings of work for SF State (3-14/3-9 CCAA) and was in line for the win but the Wildcats (12-4/8-2 CCAA) rallied against the Gators bullpen.
The Wildcats picked apart three Gators relievers and rallied from three runs down with a six-run eighth inning. Louie Canjura's groundout tied the game and Alex Pallios' single through the right side gave Chico State its first lead of the day, 5-4. The Wildcats scored a pair of insurance runs before SF State got out o the running.
In the top of the ninth,
Brady Dorn scored thanks to a passed ball but pinch hitter
Damon DeVirgilio struck out swinging to end the game with the tying run at second.
David Mansell led off the game by reaching second on a dropped fly ball, stole third, then scored on a failed pickoff at first base. The Gators doubled the lead in the third.
Zac Neumann got out of a pickle and was safe at third, and later scored on
Harley Lopez's infield groundout. In the fifth, Neumann and
Harley Lopez both singled, and Neumann scored from second on
Chris Smutny's single up the middle to make it 3-1.
Jack Harris led off the sixth inning with a single and later scored on
Chris Hayman's sac bunt but Chico State got the run back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an unearned run, which cut the lead to 4-1.
In game two, Chico State scored at least one run in every inning of the seven-inning affair. Starter
Jack Higgins (0-1) gave up six of those runs and took the loss.
