SAN FRANCISCO — The hot-hitting San Francisco State baseball team saw the bats fall silent in a series-opening 5-1 loss to visiting Cal State East Bay on Friday at Maloney Field.
The Gators (17-22/16-17 CCAA), who entered the day averaging nearly six runs a game and 13.75 in their last four games, did not have a baserunner until the fourth inning and were held hitless until the eighth inning when
Jack Harris led off the inning with a single through the right side.
Trevor Rogers drove home the Gators' lone run of the game in the ninth with another single through the right side.
The Pioneers (20-19/17-16 CCAA) tallied 10 hits. They got on the scoreboard first with a run in the third. An error led to two more runs in the sixth and a two-run eighth put the game out of reach.
San Francisco State starter
Grant Vogenthaler lasted seven and one third innings and allowed three earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.
Cal State East Bay pitcher Alex Vesia (7-2), who has the second-best ERA among CCAA starters, entered in the third inning. The senior struck out eight and allowed just two hits.
