ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The San Francisco State softball team completed the doubleheader sweep on Saturday over host Sonoma State. The Gators took game one 7-1, then outlasted the Seawolves in eight innings by a final score of 4-1.
The Gator (23-27/18-17 CCAA) offense carried over from yesterday to notched another five-run second inning of game one. With one down,
Sara Higa doubled to right and advanced to third on
Mallory Cleveland's base hit to center.
Angelica Terrel followed with a single to left that scored Higa for the first run, and
Savannah Ozuna next reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.
Michelle Castro forced in a run after being hit by a pitch to make it 2-0, and an
Andrea Hildan infield single scored pinch runner Marilena Torres.
Hayley Nunes grounded out to short, but plated Ozuna and Castro to cap off the five-run frame.
Sonoma State (26-21/18-16 CCAA) put runners on in the first four innings but
Lindsey Cassidy and the Gator defense held them out of the scoring line. Meanwhile, SF State added an insurance run in the fourth on
Madison Collins' RBI single to left that scored Nunes.
The Seawolves got in the board in the fifth on Sarah Langley's base hit to right, cutting it to 6-1. However, the Gators got the run right back in the next half inning as Higa hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Hildan, and give SF State a 7-1 lead and eventual victory.
Cassidy went the distance with one strikeout and one earned. Hildan, Collins, Higa, and Cleveland all recorded a pair of hits in the game. The SF State defense didn't commit an error for the sixth-straight game and the 17
th time this season.
Game two saw the Gators take a 1-0 advantage in the first after Castro led off the contest with a double, her 14
th of the season which puts her tied for third-place all-time in Gator history for doubles in a season. After stealing third, she scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
The Seawolves tied it up in the bottom half as Alee Balanon doubled home Julie Davis.
Karla Soto got Blakenship swinging for her first strikeout of the day in the fourth and retired the Seawolves in order in the fifth.
In the eighth,
Katie Rohrer led off with a walk and was replaced by Torres. Higa walked two batters later, and Cleveland also worked a walk to load the bases. This brought up Terrel, who was hit by a pitch to force in Torres for the late lead. With two outs, Castro knocked a single to right, scoring Higa and Cleveland to put SF State up 4-1
Soto shut the door in the bottom half for the eight-inning complete game with just 81 pitches. The 3-1 series win is the first time the Gators have taken three-of-four from Sonoma State since 2008.
