SB | Seniors Shine as Gators Wrap up Regular Season

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State softball team dropped the twin bill against the No. 2 Chico State Wildcats on Saturday to wrap up the season. The Gators fell 5-0 in game one before dropping game two, 7-3.

Chico State (47-3/37-3 CCAA) got on the board in the first of game one as Cyrena Taylor knocked a base hit down the left field line that scored Kristen Worley. They widened their lead in the third with three more, which started with Taylor's RBI single and ended with Amanda Flores' two-run base hit to center field.

Michelle Castro got the first SF State (24-31/19-21 CCAA) hit in the fourth. In the top of the fifth with one down and a Wildcat on first, Sara Mitrano hit a pop-up in foul territory that Hayley Nunes tracked down. The juniorthen fired over to second to get Bailey Akins, who was trying to tag up and advance, ending the frame.

Mallory Cleveland knocked a two-out single to center for the second Gator hit of the contest. In the sixth the visitors got another run as Wendy Cardinali came across on an error to make it 5-0.

Lindsey Cassidy, who went the complete game, struck out Akins and Sara Mitrano looking to end the top of the seventh for two of her three strikeouts on the day.

In game two, the Wildcats scored in the first when Kristin Worley came across on a groundout to third. In the bottom half the Gators plated three to take a 3-1 lead. Castro was hit by a pitch, sacrificed to second, and then stole third. Nunes knocked her in on a single to left, and Rohrer followed with a double down the left-field line that scored Nunes for the lead. Rohrer reached third on the throw and scored as next batter Madison Collins grounded out to short to cap off the three-run inning.

Karla Soto retired the Wildcats in order in the second and fifth innings, however the visitors tied it up in the fourth with a pair of runs on three hits and a Gator error. Chico State then added three more to go up 6-3 in the sixth on Cardinali's RBI base hit to left and Kristen Worley's two-run double.

SF State would put Sara Higa and Cleveland on base in the sixth looking to inch closer, but the Gators couldn't bring them around. The visitors added an insurance run in the seventh to take a 7-3 lead and the eventual win to wrap up regular season play.

Soto went the distance with a strikeout. HIldan added a pair of hits to give her 66 on the season, tying her for fifth all-time in Gator history for hits in a season. She also ended the year with a .367 batting average, which is tied-for-the sixth-best in a season in history.

The series wraps up a successful 2018 season for the Gators. Castro broke the program record for both hits and stolen bases in a season and is fifth all-time for runs in a season with 41. Higa moved into the top-ten all-time in Gator history in career doubles. Cassidy is in the top-ten in history in wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched. Head Coach Alicia Reid earned the third-most victories by a Head Coach in their first season at the helm in program history.

The Gators also as a team etched their names in the record books. SF State had the fourth-highest team batting average in program history, the t-second-most runs scored, the sixth-most hits, t-sixth-most doubles, t-seventh-most triples, and the fourth-most RBI. The Gators also notched 125 stolen bases, eclipsing the previous program record by 28. Defensively, the Gators turned the most double plays with 52.
