SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team bested Cal State LA 7-4 on Monday at Maloney Field to take the series 3-1.
The Gators (13-20/12-15 CCAA) recorded 50 hits in the series and now find themselves two games out of a potential playoff position while the Golden Eagles (19-14/16-12 CCAA) slide into a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings.
An error in the sixth inning was the difference.
Johnny Juarez led off the inning with a single and advanced to second before
Kyler Crone replaced him as a pinch runner. The speedy Crone tagged up on a fly out to left field and scored on a failed pickoff of
Antone Self, who was on first after a base hit.
Brady Dorn added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth when he turned on an 0-2 pitch for a double that scored
Jason Hare and
Jackson Kritsch.
SF State scored an unearned run in the first. Cal State LA answered in the second with a two-run single from Adam Gordon followed by a Gators error that made it 3-1.
Jack Harris got a run back in the second with a solo homer to left field.
Trevor Rogers' RBI double down the line in the third scored
Brady Dorn and tied the game at 3-3. SF State went ahead 4-3 in the fifth on an error but Rogers picked up another RBI in the process. The lead was short lived though, as Cal State LA answered in the sixth with an Anthony Ayala RBI single.
SF State starter
Matthew Hernandez (2-4) picked up the win. The senior allowed three earned runs over six innings and struck out four.
Jordan Yrastorza pitched two shutout innings and
Cameron Crone struck out the side in a perfect ninth en route to his fourth save of the season.
