SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team moved into a tie for fourth place in the CCAA standings with a 7-3 victory over visiting Sonoma State on Thursday at Maloney Field.
San Francisco State (23-24/22-19 CCAA) recorded just six hits but scored in four different innings. Sonoma State (24-23/20-21 CCAA) led 2-0 early before the Gators tied it in the fourth.
Jordan Abernathy singled and
Antone Self was drilled in the arm. They both moved up on a wild pitch and
Johnny Juarez got SF State on the board with a sac fly to right, then
Connor Fidone legged out a two-out infield single to tie it 2-2.
In the fifth inning, San Francisco State went ahead on a bases-loaded walk to
Jack Harris and
Jordan Abernathy followed with a sac fly that doubled the lead to 4-2.
The Seawolves got a run back in the sixth but
Jackson Kritsch doubled home
Connor Fidone in the bottom half of the inning. He came around to score on
Harley Lopez's sac fly to extend the lead to 6-3.
Chris Smutny's RBI single in the eighth capped the scoring at 7-3.
San Francisco State starter
Jeff Piver (3-1) struck out four through the first two innings before allowing a run in the third. He allowed another run in the fourth but worked out of a bases-loaded jam thanks to an infield fly and a check-swing dribbler down the first base line. Piver went six innings and struck out six. He handed the ball over to the bullpen in the seventh and Harris helped preserve the lead with a diving catch in right center with the bases loaded to get reliever
Brett Elgin out of the jam.
Jordan Yrastorza worked a scoreless eighth and
Cameron Crone struck out the side in the ninth.

Cal State Dominguez Hills rallied from a 2-1 deficit to upset Cal Poly Pomona 3-2 in 10 innings in Pomona. The Broncos drop to 22-19 and into a tie for fourth place with the Gators. Last-place Cal State San Bernardino shocked Cal State LA 12-8, dropping the Golden Eagles to 21-20 in CCAA play. First-place No. 15 Cal State Monterey Bay bested Cal State East Bay 5-1, dropping the Pioneers to 20-21.
