CHICO, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team dropped its season opener on Friday versus No. 13 Colorado Mines at University Soccer Stadium on the Chico State campus.
San Francisco State (0-1-0) was outshot 16-7 and 8-2 on goal. However, the Gators did create scoring opportunities with four corner kicks.
The nationally-ranked Orediggers put the pressure on early with a goal in the seventh minute. Emily Townsend's kick off of a set piece was headed in by Taylor McRae.
Tami Kwong nearly tied it up in the 11th minute but her header went high. In the 27th minute, Jennifer Kendall dribbled from inside the box and back towards the top, where she turned and scored to double the Orediggers lead. SF State countered yet again but
Ally King's shot in the 30th minute was blocked. The Golden Gators surrendered another goal with less than a minute to go in the half when Eliot Edwards connected with Hannah Stoner, who scored from three yards out.
The Orediggers continued to press at the offensive end but the SF State defense settled down and held Colorado Mines scoreless for the final 45 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Nicki Rucki made a pair of second-half saves to finish with five on the day. Shots by Ally King and Angie Gonzalez were both saved by Orediggers goalkeeper Shannon Mooney, who picked up the shutout.
The Golden Gators will stay in Chico for another contest on Sunday, September 2. The Golden Gators kickoff at 11 a.m. versus Regis. Live coverage will provided by host Chico State.
