SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's soccer team battled to a draw vs. No. 8 Cal State LA on Friday at Cox Stadium.
The nationally-ranked Golden Eagles (8-1-1/5-0-1 CCAA) entered on a six-game win streak but the 2017 CCAA Tournament Champions failed to scored for the first time this season. Conversely, the Golden Gators (4-2-3/1-2-2 CCAA) snapped a two-game skid and picked up a point to move into sixth place.
Golden Eagles fired the first shot of the game, a shot by Antonio Rosas that was blocked by the San Francisco State defense. For the Gators,
Moses Gutierrez's shot in the 11th minute from close range was saved. Tim Klefisch attempted a shot in the 13th minute that
Peter Swinkels smothered. Cal State LA's Carlos Zarate had a shot above the circle as a result of a corer kick in the 19th minute but that was blocked. CSULA had a pair of shots in the 31st minute but Swinkels stopped both of those.
Brandt Dixon had a 1v1 from the left side in the 36th minute but his shot sailed high. At the other end, Swinkels got his arms in front of another shot in the 37th minute. In the 41st minute,
Aydan Bowers' header off of a foul was saved.
A corner kick in the 50th minute resulted in a header for Morten Joershol that went way high. The Gators' first corner kick of the contest came in the 54th minute but nothing came of it. Carlos Trujeque leal's first shot in the 19th minute was blocked and his second was saved. Trujeque leal was subsequently issued a yellow card after making contact with the goalkeeper following his second shot. In the 85th minute, Leonardo Nogueira took a shot in front of the near post that Swinkels made his sixth save of the day on.
Dixon had a shot from the left side in the 93rd minute that goalkeeper Alexander Brems just got a hand on enough to deflect for a save. CSULA's Samuel Croucher had a shot in the 98th minute that hooked high and wide. Dixon had a hail-mary shot with a second left in the first overtime period that went high. In double overtime, Crinan Dunbar received a red card, which forced the Gators to play a man down the final five minutes. The Golden Eagles had two more shots on goal but Swinkels made both, giving him a career-high eight on the day.
Head Coach Javier Ayala-Hil: "I thought we played very well defensively today. As time went on, we got a rhythm and we did well on the attack. We just couldn't put away our opportunities and when you're playing a team of that caliber, those chances are limited. We still got a shutout and a point and now we look forward to Sunday."
