SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team scored early but a pair of second-half goals gave the edge to Cal State LA in CCAA action on Friday at Cox Stadium.
The Golden Gators (4-4-1/2-2-1 CCAA) suffered their first loss in five matches while thhe Golden Eagles (6-3-1/3-2-1 CCAA) moved into a second-place tie with No. 24 Sonoma State.
Cal State LA applied the pressure early with a couple of shots but it was the Gators who struck first. In the 17th minute,
Tami Kwong netted her second goal of the season when she followed her own shot off of goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado. Back-to-back saves by Gators goalkeeper
Nicki Rucki in the 22nd minute kept the Golden Eagles off of the board.
The Gators lacked depth on Friday with starters Ana Williams and Janessa Staab both sidelined with injuries and it showed in the second half. CSULA outshot San Francisco State 9-1 and held a 7-2 corner kick advantage in the second half. The Golden Eagles scored their first goal of the day on a set piece from the right side in the 52nd minute. Yaqualin Garcia played the ball in and Adyson Willett headed it in from the middle of the box. In the 78th minute, Leslie Ramirez passed the ball ahead to Anahie Duran on the left side for the game-winner. Duran's shot hit the near post but spun back over the goal line and just out of reach of Rucki and defender Quincy Kaplan, who made a defensive save on a Duran shot four minutes earlier. Kylie Schneider had a shot for the Gators in the 85th minute that was saved but it was too far out to pose much of a threat.
