MSOC | San Francisco State Settles For Draw After Early Goal

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's soccer team scored in the opening minute on Thursday but settled for a 1-1 draw in a non-conference match versus Holy Names at Cox Stadium.

The Golden Gators (2-0-1) outshot the Hawks (0-2-1) 21-10 but only found the back of the net once in a very physical contest that tallied 11 fouls each and five total yellow cards, four of which were issued to San Francisco State.

First Half
San Francisco State scored less than a minute into action thanks to freshman Crinan Dunbar. Clayton Sato worked the ball into the box and was swarmed by three defenders. The freshman footed the loose ball and punched it into the far post. Dunbar had two more close looks in the 38th and 40th minutes that were both stopped by HNU goalkeeper Bryan Canchola.

Second Half

The Golden Gators nearly got another goal right out of the gates in the second half. Dunbar had a good look but his shot was saved by defender Edwin Hernandez. Holy Names got into the box in the 67th minute but San Francisco State goalkeeper Peter Swinkels was there for the stop. Dunbar nearly had his second goal of the day in the 78th minute but Canchola dove and stopped the ball at the goal line. Holy Names' Lucas Felice tied it up in the 85th minute on a defensive miscue that left Swinkels all alone and forced overtime.

Overtime

The Golden Gators outshot the Hawks 4-3 in the first overtime, though Holy Names' attempt with under a minute to go hit off the crossbar and nearly ended the contest. San Francisco State outshot HNU 6-1 in the second overtime. Two of those attempts went high while two were blocked. Both of Aydan Bowers' headers were saved.

Quotables

Head Coach Javier Ayala-Hil: "Our gameplan was the same approach that we've had, it's been working so far. We wanted to attack and control the game. They did a good job of putting us under pressure and we dealt with it for the most part. We had an early goal and got confident but over time got over confident and weren't as sharp as could have been. It wasn't great to give up a goal that late but we played better in overtime and got pretty close."
