SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco State women's basketball team fell to the visiting Stanislaus State Warriors on Thursday by a score of 70-58, snapping the Gators' six-game win streak, which was the longest since the 1984-85 season.
- Toni Edwards paced the Gators (8-8/7-4 CCAA) with a career-high 15 points and dished out six assists and six rebounds. Jhaina Stephens added her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Amani Alexander poured in nine points and added five boards.
- Isabella Lamonea added five points and a season-high eight rebounds. Danielle Palmer had eight points and three blocks.
- SF State committed a season-high 26 turnovers and only forced seven steals. The Gators shot 30 percent (16-53), which is the second lowest recorded this season.
- The Warriors (4-11/3-8 CCAA) got to the line 28 times and made 22 free throws, which is the second most by a SF State opponent. The Gators had 31 free throw attempts, which is also the second most this year.
Palmer got the scoring started with a layup off a nice dish from Stephens. Taimane Lesa-Hardee hit a three for the early lead, 5-3 and Stephens followed with her first basket of the night. Consecutive triples by the Warriors gave them an 11-7 lead with four left in the first as part of an 8-0 run. Defensively the Gators were stout by holding Stanislaus scoreless for nearly six minutes and just one for their last 11 shots. In the closing second Angelica Baylon made the and-one layup and hit the free throw to carry a 14-8 lead after one.
The Warriors pulled ahead 15-9 before Palmer made a jumper in the paint to end the scoreless run. Alexander drove into the lane with just over five left in the second to cut it to four, and she came back the next possession to drain a three-pointer off an assist from Lamonea. Brittney Livingston made a jumper at the top of the key with 2:31 left as part of a 9-0 run that put them up ten, 26-16. Alexander curt it to six tie a layup and made the and-one free throw. Baylon added another from deep, their fifth of the half, to go back up by nine with under a minute left. Turnovers plagued SF State in the first 20 minutes as they committed 14 and only had one steal.
The visitors began the third with a 6-1 run to push the advantage to 14, with the lone point coming on an Edwards free throw, and the redshirt senior made two more and followed with a coast-to-coast layup that narrowed the deficit, 37-25. Madison Corder continued the run with a jumper at the top of the key, but Stanislaus State got another triple to go back up 13, 40-27. Stanislaus State pulled ahead more with five from the charity stripe. With just over a minute left, Kaleigh Pugh got to the line and dunk the contested jumper that cut it to 16.
Another Warrior three put them up 60-39 early in the fourth, but Palmer got the offense going with a basket off an inside pass from Corder. Lamonea followed with two technical free throws. With 3:50 left Stephens hit a jumper just inside the arc off a pass from Edwards, who leads the CCAA in assists and ranks 15th in the nation, making the score 63-47. Lamonea found her stroke from deep with her first triple of the night, which came off another assist from Edwards, her fourth of the night, and Alexander followed with a triple of her own that made it a 65-53 game. Stephens got the steal and score with 17 seconds remaining that narrowed the deficit to ten, but Stanislaus State ended the contest with two more from the stripe to seal the win.
The Golden Gators hit the road once again to battle Cal State San Bernardino on January 24. SF State will then take on Cal Poly Pomona, which will be broadcasted on ESPN 3.
