SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State wrestling team picked up another pair of wins on Friday. The Gators earned another crucial RMAC victory, 26-15, over New Mexico Highlands University, then won a nailbiter, 27-26, over Simpson.
Versus Highlands,
Brandon Vu and
Jordan Gurrola started the Gators with a 7-0 lead versus New Mexico Highlands thanks to a 6-4 decision and an 11-2 major decision, respectively. Highlands pulled within a point with back-to-back decisions at 141 and 149 pounds.
Mason Boutain (157 pounds) and
Maxamillian Schneider (165 pounds) then gave SF State some breathing room. Boutain won by injury default while Schneider scored a tech fall in 3:25. At 174 pounds,
Kurtis Clem held on for an 8-4 victory. He scored an escape with his riding time whittled down to 1:02 but he escaped in time to tally another point for riding time.
Justin Pichedwatana (184 pounds), who had an eight-bout win streak earlier this season, extended his current streak to six and secured the team victory with a tech fall in 5:35, which was especially pertinent given the Gators faced a forfeit at 197 pounds.
Kevin Henry battled Cowboys heavyweight Julian Sanchez but dropped the bout 5-1.
Against Simpson, both teams forfeited at two weight classes. In the 125 pound bout,
Brandon Vu got the action started with a tech fall in 2:12. Paired with the Red Hawks forfeit at 133 pounds, that grew the Gators' lead to 11-0. However, Armand Molina scored a tech fall for the Red Hawks at 141 pounds. The Gators forfeited at 149 pounds but that was offset by a Simpson forfeit at 157 pounds.
Justin Hansz got the nod at 165 pounds. He led 10-2 but was pinned with 19 seconds remaining in the bout. At 174 pounds, Clem led 12-1, then scored a fall at 4:01 to give the lead back to the Gators, 23-17.
At 184 pounds, Pichedwatana rallied late but dropped an 8-4 decision to Bryce DeCamargo. Paired with the Gators' forfeit at 197 pounds, the Gators found themselves trailing for the first time all day, 26-23. Henry was more agile than his heavyweight counterpart, Chris Borba. After a scoreless first period, Henry frustrated Borba into penalty after penalty, which led to a 4-0 advantage. Henry held on for the 7-1 decision, which tied the match at 26-26. SF State won by criteria, 29-27, which tipped the scales in favor of the Gators.
