COSTA MESA, Calif. — The San Francisco State wrestling team opened up the 2019-20 season with a 32-11 victory at Vanguard on Thursday night in The Pit.
Thursday marked the return of wrestling at Vanguard after a 39-year hiatus. The Gators weren't phased by a standing room only crowd. The Gators had an early lead due to injury forfeits at the 125 and 184-pound weight classes. Vanguard's Sunny Luna scored a major decision at 133 pounds over
Angelo Reyes to give the Lions their first points but the Gators never trailed.
Alex Felix and
Mason Boutain both scored major decisions of their own, at 141 and 157 pounds, respectively.
Maxamillian Schneider, wrestling at 157 pounds this season, pushed the lead to 19-4 with a tech fall and
Kurtis Clem, wrestling at 165 pounds, scored a 7-4 decision.
Tyee Ducharme fell 10-3 at 174 pounds and No. 4
Justin Pichedwatana won his 184-pound match by injury default to lock up the match for the Gators.
John Chetwynd, wrestling in his first-ever college match, scored another major decision for the team. Heavyweight
Justin Ramos fell 5-3 in double overtime to Joshua Sapien to wrap up the match at 32-11.
Head Coach Jason Welch: "Overall it was a good start for our guys. We got those first match jitters out, made weight for the first time, and we got the win. I'm especially proud of John Chetwynd for picking up his first college win. The staff is extremely excited for this season. "
The Golden Gators have some time to rest before they head to Cal Poly on Saturday, November 16 at 3 p.m. Then they have a quick turnaround, hosting Stanford at home on Sunday, November 17 at 3 p.m.
