ARCATA, Calif. — Madison Corder posted a career-high 20 points but the San Francisco State fell 71-59 at Humboldt State on Thursday night in CCAA play.
The Gators (0-8/0-5 CCAA) posted their best shooting performance in the past four games but a cold third quarter doomed their chances against the first-place Lumberjacks (8-2/4-1 CCAA). SF State shot 57.1 percent (16-of-18) from inside the arc but shot just 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) from deep.
- Corder scored her career-high on 8-of-11 shooting. The sophomore played 39 minutes and added seven rebounds and a steal.
- Taimane Lesa-Hardee added a season-high 15 points and Muirae Gomez recorded her third consecutive double-digit game with 14.
- HSU had four players in double digits, led by a game-high 24 from Alexis Thrower. Madeline Hatch added 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from deep, and Tyra Turner and Molly Dixon scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Thrower and Turner both had double-doubles. Thrower earned hers with 10 rebounds while Turner dished out 10 assists.
- The Gators won the rebounding battle, 32-28.
- SF State committed 20 turnovers, their fifth game of the season with 20 or more, which led to 24 Lumberjacks points.
The Gators led by four early on but saw the game tied at the six-minute mark. A Hatch three-pointer put the Lumberjacks up 12-11 but the lead changed hands four more times until the end of the quarter. Ashley Hart's three-pointer with six seconds remaining tied it 18-18.
The Gators went back ahead, 20-18, on a Gomez layup but fell behind 28-23 after a 5-0 HSU run. SF State pulled to within a point on a Gomez jumper at the three-minute mark but the Lumberjacks ended on a 4-0 run that pushed the halftime deficit to five.
The Lumberjacks opened the second half on a 9-0 run and grew the lead to 14 before Gomez made a backend free throw with 8:06 to go. That barely slowed HSU as Hatch splashed a three-pointer and the deficit continued to grow. A Thrower jumper with 4:18 put the margin at 20 and the Lumberjacks lead grew to as large as 21. SF State trimmed the deficit back to 15 but HSU ended the period with two more baskets for a 60-41 lead.
The Gators stormed back in the final 10 minutes but it wasn't enough to overcome the ground lost in the third quarter. SF State finished the game on a 10-2 run that trimmed the lead to a dozen.
The Gators close out the season on Sunday, December 15 with a 1 p.m. game versus Stanislaus State. The game will be streamed on the CCAA Network and live stats will also be available at sfstategators.com.
