WBB | Sharp Shooting Lifts Gators Over Pioneers

HAYWARD, California - Despite a late push, the San Francisco State women's basketball team got back in the win column on Thursday with an 87-82 overtime victory against host Cal State East Bay. SF State now has its most CCAA victories since the 2013-14 season, and most overall wins since 2015-16.

By the Numbers

  • SF State (9-13/8-9 CCAA) dropped 40 points in the first 20 minutes of action, shooting 50 percent (15-30) from the field while holding Cal State East Bay to just 36 percent (10-28) and out-rebounding the Pioneers 20-15.
  • The Gators shot a season-best 49 percent (31-63) from the floor in the contest. SF State was also strong from the line as they made 22 free throws, which is tied for the third most this campaign.
  • Toni Edwards handed out four assists and now has 108 on the season, two shy of breaking into the top-ten in Gator history for assists in a season, while also scoring a career-high 24. She also went 11-of-18 from the line, which is tied for the second-most free throws made in the last seven seasons.
  • Danielle Palmer had her sixth double-digit scoring performance of the season with 12 points. Madison Corder tied a career high with ten points. Taimane Lesa-Hardee added eleven, her ninth time in double figures, while Jhaina Stephens added ten points and a team-high nine rebounds.
  • Amani Alexander poured in 14 points and a career-high seven rebounds.
  • Six Gators were in double digits for the second time this season.
  • With the victory, the Gators are a perfect 2-0 against Cal State East Bay (11-13/8-10 CCAA) this year for their first season sweep of the Pioneers since the 2010-11 season.
  • The nine wins by Natasha Smith are the third most by a first-year Head Coach in program history, trailing just Marueen Burger who accumulated 13 victories in 1984-85 and Emily Manwaring's 20 wins in 1979-80.
  • The 87 points scored are the tied for the second-most put on the scoreboard this season.

First Quarter

Lesa-Hardee's back-to-back baskets gave the Gators a 6-5 lead early in the first. SF State then surged to a 18-10 lead after hitting four-of-five from the field, which included baskets from Stephens, Corder and Palmer as well as three-pointer from Alexander off a dish from Lesa-Hardee. The hosts cut it to one on a 12-1 run, with five of those points coming from Regina Sankey, before Palmer battled for the layup at the buzzer to make it 20-15.

Second Quarter

Palmer began the second with a defensive board and a bucket going the other way as the Gators now led by seven. Isabella Lamonea answered a Pioneer layup with a drive of her own, making it a 24-19 lead with 8:10 remaining. The Gators continued to roll as they now led by eight following a 5-0 streak over two minutes, which was capped off by Stephens' jumper off an assist from Edwards, her second of the contest. Edwards made two from the line and Palmer continued her strong offensive play with a pair of layups as the Gators now led  by 12, 36-24. Alexander added four points in the closing minute as SF State answered the Pioneers offensively, going up 40-32 at the end of the half for another 20-point quarter.

Third Quarter

Lamonea's first triple of the night, which came from the right side, ended a Pioneer surge to start the second and put the Gators back up by six. East Bay quickly narrowed the deficit to three following a Kinsco Kelemen three-pointer, but Lesa-Hardee went the other way with a jumper to maintain the five-point cushion. Up two, Corder doubled the lead as she battled for the jumper in the paint, and Edwards spun through the lane for two to put the Purple and Gold back up by six. Alexander continued the run with a consecutive jumpers, her sixth basket of the evening, for the 60-54 lead after three.

Fourth Quarter

A 7-0 Pioneer run made it a one-point game with 5:36 left in the fourth before Edwards put SF State back up by three with a layup. With 4:03 left, Corder put the Gators up 64-61 with two from the charity stripe and hit consecutive jumpers off assists from Taisia Fleming and Alexander to widen the lead. Stephens converted from the line and made a bucket as the Gators tried to counter East Bay's offensive push. Sankey made it a one-point game, 73-72, with four-straight free throws with 54 seconds left and hauled in the big defensive board following a timeout and drew the foul to go to the line again where she tied things up and force overtime. Stephens threw up a chance at the buzzer for the win, but the shot was ruled to be after time expired.

Overtime

Edwards made a free throw and Lesa-Hardee added a jumper to start overtime. Stephens put the visitors up by five with 1:49 left with one from the line, but former Gator Courtenay Brown nailed the clutch three at the 1:24 mark to cut it to 81-80. Edwards and Sankey both traded layups, but Edwards' three free throws in the closing minute helped SF State ice the game.
