SANTA ROSA, Calif. — The San Francisco State baseball team used a pair of late home runs to secure a 9-8 victory in the team's CCAA opener versus Sonoma State on Sunday afternoon at Sypher Field. Game two of the doubleheader was halted due to darkness in the bottom of the eighth with SSU leading 15-4.
- SF State is hitting .299 as a team and is now averaging 5.2 runs per game.
- Jackson Kritsch went 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI, and a pair of walks.
- Jason Hare went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
- Chris Smutny also had a pair of hits. He drove in a pair and scored a run.
- Five of the Gators' 11 hits were for extra bases.
- The Gators batted around in the second. Trevor Rogers led off the inning with a single, followed by an error in centerfield that allowed him to advance to third and Jack Harris to reach base, then Chris Smutny drove them home with a triple to left. Hare's one-out double down the left field line made it 3-0 and he later scored on a wild pitch. Kritsch walked and made it 5-0 when he later scored on another error. Catcher Drew Downing's two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning trimmed the Gators lead to 5-2.
- In the fourth, back-to-back batters reached on errors and Jack Harris' sac fly brought home Brady Dorn to make it 6-2. The Seawolves got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on Matt Hill's two-out RBI triple.
- The teams traded runs again in the fifth. Hare reached on a ground-rule double and later scored on a Kritsch single to right. SSU designate hitter James Harwell's two-out single up the middle made it 7-4.
- The Seawolves roughed up Jordyn Eglite for four runs in the seventh and took an 8-4 lead.
- With two outs in the eighth, Dorn tied the game 8-8 with a two-out shot to center field, his first of the year.
- Rogers led off the ninth inning with a go-ahead solo shot to right center that proved to be the eventual game-winner.
- Joshua Romero has become a bit of a good luck charm for the Gators, as he has recorded two of the team's three wins. The sophomore tossed two and two thirds shutout innings of relief. He allowed just one hit and struck out one.
- Jeff Piver made his second start and struck out four in four and two thirds innings. He surrendered four runs, two earned.
- Eglite struggled in his second outing. He allowed four runs, all earned, in one and a two third innings.
The Gators will need to complete game two of Sunday's doubleheader and will also need to makeup games three and four of the series, which have been postponed. The Gators are scheduled to host Chico State for a four-game CCAA series, Friday 22-24, at Maloney Field.
