STOCKTON, Calif. — A six-run ninth inning powered the San Francisco State baseball team to a win over Stanislaus State on Friday in a CCAA Championships elimination game.
The Gators improve to 25-20-1 while Stan State drops to 30-23.
- Jason Hare caught all nine innings for the 25th time this season. He has now caught 319 innings of a possible 383 and two thirds innings. That's over 83 percent of the time behind the dish.
- Brady Dorn had another hit and is on a seven-game hit streak. In five career games at Banner Island Ballpark, the senior is batting .500 (9-for-18).
- Jason Hare's sacrifice fly in the second inning put the Gators on the board first.
- The Warriors answered in the fourth. Vinny Magriotta singled up the middle and later scored on a Grant Bunker single to left center that left fielder Jonah Gonzales nearly gloved. With two outs and runners on first and third, Nate Jenkins entered from the bullpen and got a routine groundball to third.
- In the top of the sixth, Riley Cleary knocked in Brady Dorn that gave the Gators a 2-1 lead and forced the Warriors to turn to the bullpen.
- In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on second and third, Jenkins thought he got strike three to end the inning but it was called a ball. Jayce Gardner fouled off another pitch and then sent a two-run single to right center to put the Warriors up 3-2.
- The Gators wasted an opportunity in the eighth. Brady Dorn drew a leadoff walk and was placed at second via a balk big Matt Pulos struck out the side.
- However, the Gators didn't roll over in the ninth and wore down Pulos. Jason Hare drew a leadoff walked and Jackson Kritsch, after a pair of unsuccessful bunt attempts, moved him up on a groundball out. Jonah Gonzales singled and All-CCAA outfielder Jack Harris followed with the game-tying single.
- From, there Harley Lopez's four-pitch walk chased Pulos. The Warriors went to Brandon Scott who balked home the go-ahead run. Then, Trevor Rogers ripped a two-run double to right center and Cleary tripled home a run. Cleary scored on a dropped popup to make it 8-3.
- Pinch hitter Michael Wyatt homered to right center and the Warriors added another run but Dylan Madole got Nathan Gutierrez, who represented the go-ahead run, to pop up to end it.
- In just his third career start, Sebastian Selway matched his longest outing of the year with three and two thirds innings for the Gators. After two spotless innings, he allowed a leadoff single and a walk in the third. A wild pitch behind Grant Victor moved both runners into scoring position but Selway struck out Victor to work his way out of the jam. He allowed three hits and the run in the fourth and had two strikeouts.
- Jenkins (2-2) held it down for the stretched-thin Gators bullpen. He allowed four runs over four and a third innings and struck out four en route to the win.
- Madole got a strikeout in an inning of work to pick up his fifth save.
- Stan State starter Kevin Hahn went five and a third innings and settled for a no decision. Pulos (0-2) took the loss after running into trouble in his third inning of work. Scott pitched the final two outs and was charged with two runs, one earned.
The Gators have a quick turnaround, heading right back onto the diamond on Friday, May 10 at 8:05 for a rematch with No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay. Be sure to follow San Francisco State baseball on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook at @sfstatebaseball.
