SEASIDE, California - The San Francisco State softball team had its eight-game win streak snapped on Thursday as they fell to Cal State San Bernardino, 9-3, in their CCAA Tournament opener.
SF State will next take on the loser of the UC San Diego vs Sonoma State contest tomorrow at 5 p.m. in an elimination game.
- The loss is just the second in the Gators' (37-17) last 19 contests.
- Brylynn Vallejos added two more hits to her dominate offensive season and now has 92 on the year, which is the sixth-most in a season in CCAA history. Vallejos has now tied the team record for doubles in a season with 17, which was set a season ago by teammate Michelle Castro. Additionally Vallejos has 52 runs on the year, one shy of tying the program record for runs in a season.
- Katelyn Sturm and Sydney Jenkins each had a pair of hits, and Jenkins knocked in two which came in the fourth to tie the game, 3-3.
- This is the 24th contest where SF State has accumulated ten-or-more hits and just their fourth loss.
- The ten hits accumulated gives SF State 500 on the year, which is the second-most in program history to the 503 hits that the team in 2007 recorded.
- The Coyotes went up 1-0 in the first on Haley Finn's RBI double to right. San Bernardino looked to extend their lead as they had runners on second and third with no outs, but Sydney Kreimann lined out to Lehua DeLeon, who doubled up the runner at second and then fired home to Jenkins who applied the tag to get the triple play and null the threat.
- In the third, Jamiana Gateb homered to left-center to widen the lead to 2-0.
- The Gators got on the board in the bottom half as Vallejos doubled to left and Hayley Nunes plater her with a double of her own to right-center.
- San Bernardino went back up by two as Claudia Lopez scored when Kianna Abellera got into rundown to allow the run to come across.
- In the fourth, Sturm led off with a double to right-center and DeLeon was hit by a pitch. With two down Jenkins tied it up as she doubled to deep center that make it 3-3.
- The Coyotes broke through in the fifth to go up by six, which featured a Finn grand slam, a Lopez RBI single and a wild pitch as they pulled away with the win.
- Emily Mitchell got the start and threw four innings. Karla Soto pitched three in relief with just one earned and one strikeout.
