SAN FRANCISCO —
Adrian Medina sent the San Francisco State men's soccer team home victorious on Thursday afternoon with a 1-0 double overtime, non-conference win over Holy Names.
The Gators (1-1) bounced back from a 1-0 loss in their season opener at Notre Dame de Namur. HNU (1-2), which lost its overtime season opener 1-0 to Cal State Monterey Bay and defeated Humboldt State 3-2, outshot the Gators 19-7 and had a 4-2 corner kick advantage. However, the shots weren't as lopsided as they seemed – the Gators had three shots on goal compared to five for HNU.
Medina's goal came in the 102nd minute on an assist by Ramiro Palencia. It was the first goal for the redshirt freshman, and the first assist for Palencia, who transferred to San Francisco from Cal State Dominguez Hills.
SF State goalkeeper Peter Swinkels made five saves and picked up the shutout victory. HNU's Mark Redfield made a pair of saves before allowing the game-winner.
"What a great way to grab our first win! It was a back and forth game and both teams created multiple chances to score. I couldn't be more proud of how our team mentally dug in and Adrian scored an absolute beauty to help the team grab the W," — First-year Head Coach Pedro Osório, who earned his first career win on Thursday.
SF State heads across the Golden Gate Bridge on Sunday, September 14 to take on Dominican at noon. Live stats and video will be provided by Dominican. Updates will also be available on Twitter at @sfstate_msoc and Instagram at @sfstate_msoccer.
