GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The No. 12 San Francisco State wrestling team suffered a pair of losses on Thursday, falling 31-21 to Western Colorado and 45-0 to No. 25 Colorado Mesa.
After going undefeated in the month of December and starting January with a first-place finish at the Menlo Open, the Gators have gone just 1-5 in duals this month, dropping five straight contests. SF State stands at 7-7 and remain shorthanded since losing starters
Nathan Cervantez (133 lb.) and
Alex Felix (141 lb.) to injury in a January 10 home dual versus No. 11 Adams State.
Mason Boutain, who debuted at No. 6 in the NCAA Division II rankings at 149 pounds, was also sidelined for Thursday's contests.
Six of the ten bouts were decided by pin. The Gators fell behind early after.
Aaron Perez suffered a major decision to No. 10 Patrick Ellis and the next two Gators were pinned. A forfeit at 149 pounds found the Gators in a 22-0 hole that they couldn't climb out of. No. 4
Maxamillian Schneider pinned Cole Mortensen in 1:16, his fifth consecutive pin and 12th overall of the season. The Gators also got points from No. 3
Justin Pichedwatana at 184 pounds, as well as pins from
Andrew Herrera at 197 lb. and heavyweight
Justin Ramos.

In the nightcap, the Gators were stunned by No. 25 Colorado Mesa. Schneider did not wrestle and the Gators instead forfeited the 157 lb. bout, leading to a 27-0 deficit halfway through the match. CMU sent Dyan Ranieri to the mat rather than No. 8 Payton Tawater, who Schneider may still see in regional or national competition. Pichedwatana saw his 18-bout win streak snapped with an 8-2 loss to Nolan Krone. Ramos nearly fended off the sweep. The Gators heavyweight led 6-4 late but suffered a takedown and a two-point near fall with one second left. Head Coach
Jason Welch argued the near fall call, which would send the bout into overtime but the call was confirmed by replay. That led to the first-ever sweep for Colorado Mesa.
