SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team swept Saturday's CCAA doubleheader versus Cal State San Marcos as Gators Head Coach Tony Schifano earned his 99th and 100th career victories. SF State took game one 10-3 and walked off in the eighth inning in game two by the score of 3-2.
- SF State held a moment of silence prior to the game for SF State Athletics Hall of Famer, former Head Coach Orrin Freeman. Freeman passed away on Friday at the age of 69 and is second all-time in program history with 130 wins in just four seasons.
- Schifano entered the season with 90 victories and the 10 so far this year give him 100. Schifano already passed Bob Rodrigo (92) this season and is three games away from matching Al Figgone at fifth on the all-times wins list.
- Nick Upstill had the game-winning hit in game two and has both of the Gators' walk-off hits this season. The freshman is batting a team-leading .463.
- Kritsch went 4-for-6 with a home run and five RBI.
- The Gators currently have three players in the Top 10 of the conference in hitting - Upstill is fourth, Jackson Kritsch is sixth at .444, and Richie Rios is ninth at .409. Jonah Gonzales is 11th on the list at .400.
- Jordyn Eglite's .133 batting average against is the lowest among CCAA pitchers.
GAME ONE
- In the bottom of the first, Jonah Gonzales was hit by a pitch, then stole second. Obstruction was called and Gonzales was awarded third. He later scored on Jackson Kritsch's infield single.
- Rudy Aguilar's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the second doubled the lead.
- A leadoff walk in the third proved costly as the Cougars tied the game and regained the lead on an error and a squeeze play.
- In the fifth, Aguilar and Gonzales both singled and Aguilar scored on a double play ball to tie the game at 3-3.
- Both teams went in order in the sixth and Sebastian Selway tossed a flawless seventh.
- The Gators put together a two-out rally in the seventh. Gonzales walked, Upstill singled, and Kritsch launched a three-run homer to left.
- Richie Rios' ground-rule double scored two more to make it 8-3.
- A pair of Cougars throwing errors in the eighth led to a run and Trevor Rogers added a sac fly to make it 10-3.
- Gators starter Jordyn Eglite allowed three runs on three hits over six innings but settled for the no-decision.
- Selway (2-0) earned the victory with one hit and a pair of strikeouts over two innings of relief.
- Hudson Hartley pitched a perfect ninth.
- Cougars starter Jeremy Wiegman also settled for a no-decision. He allowed three runs and six hits in six innings of work.
- Jacob Miller pitched just two thirds but was shelled for five runs and took the loss. Tague Cole faced three runners and recorded an out, and Tony Johnson allowed two more runs in one tenth inning.
GAME TWO
- The teams traded blows in the first. A fielder's choice in the the top of the first put CSUSB up early but Krtisch answered with a sac fly in the bottom half of the inning.
- A Gators error in the third led to another CSUSB lead.
- With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Marco Salvetti scored on a wild pitch
- Upstill led off the seventh with a single. Preston Kelly was subsequently ejected for his remarks and Aiden Yarwood was pressed into action out of the bullpen. The Gators loaded the bases and seemed poised for the win but had to go to extras for another run.
- SF State didn't waste time scoring in the eighth. With one out, Jason Hare and Gonzales both walked. Jacob Miller came out of the bullpen and Upstill won the at-bat with an RBI double to right field.
- Tyler Franks went four innings and allowed two runs in a starting effort.
- Mike Manley pitched a perfect fifth and Nate Jenkins (3-1) faced just one ove the minimum over the final three innings.
- Tommy Garcia allowed two runs in three and a third innings. Preston Kelly did not allow a run but saw his day ended when he was ejected in the bottom of the seventh. Aiden Yarwood went an inning and a third and Miller did not record an out.
