BSB | Gators Win Big, Walk-Off for Doubleheader Sweep

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team swept Simpson in a non-conference doubleheader at Maloney Field on Saturday, 10-0 and 6-5.

  • A day after putting up a dozen hits, SF State (3-0) tallied 13 in game one and needed just four in game two on Saturday.
  • The Gators are hitting .326 for the series.
  • In three games, SF State pitchers have posted a 1.80 ERA and have held Simpson (3-8) to just .153.
  • In the two games, Jonah Gonzales went 3-for-7 with three runs, four RBI, and a pair of walks.

How They Scored

  • Riley Cleary's single to center field got the scoring going in the first.
  • The Gators added two more in the second. Kyler Crone singled and got all the way to third on an error, which also allowed Richie Rios to score.
  • SF State doubled its lead in the fourth. Rudy Aguilar doubled home Crone and In tGonzales' single back up the middle scored a pair.
  • Aguilar added another run in the fifth with an RBI groundout.
  • Jackson Kritsch added a sac fly in the sixth to make it 8-0.
  • In the seventh, Rios scored on a passed ball and Kayleb Becerra drove in a run with a sac fly.

On the Mound
  • Jordyn Eglite (1-0) faced one over the minimum in six innings of one-hit ball.
  • Mike Manley tossed a pair of perfect innings and Jack Reitsma struck out two in a perfect ninth.
  • Nick Sanderson (0-2) gave up six runs on eight hits in three innings of work. Collin Bovee gave up two runs over the next three innings, and Jake Alexander was charged with a run.

How They Scored

  • Simpson plated runs in the third and fourth
  • SF State didn't record a hit until the fourth but the Gators manufactured a couple of runs that inning. Gonzales walked and stole second, and advanced to third on a flyout. Riley Cleary walked and moved up 90 feet thanks to a passed ball. Gonzales scored on Trevor Rogers's sac fly. Jackson Kritsch broke up the no-hitter with a triple down the left field line that scored Cleary and tied the game at 2-2.
  • The Gators failed to get a shutdown inning in the fifth and a five-hit inning found SF State trailing again, 5-2.
  • SF State went down in order in the sixth and Thaddues Wilson's pinch-hit single pulled SF State to within two but the Gators were down to their final out. With runners on second and third, Gonzales delivered a game-tying triple to left center.

On the Mound
  • Tyler Franks made his first appearance since suffering an injury in his 2018 debut. He tossed 46 pitches and left after two and two thirds innings trailing 2-0. He allowed three hits and struck out a pair.
  • Theo Dopkins was roughed up for three runs on four hits in just two thirds innings.
  • Nate Jenkins (1-0) struck out five in two and two thirds innings and came up with the win in game two.
  • Damien Awai went six and a third innings and gave up five runs. Jackson Bennett (0-1) entered with a 5-3 led but left with the loss.
