LA JOLLA, Calif. — In a series that could had close games and could have gone either way, the San Francisco State baseball team was victorious on getaway day, 8-3, at #2/3 UC San Diego.
- The Gators (12-6/6-6 CCAA) dropped the series opener 4-3, then Saturday's doubleheader 10-7 and 6-0 in seven innings to the Tritons (13-4/8-4 CCAA).
- The Gators outhit the Tritons 14-9 and a pair of home runs, both by Jason Hare. The Tritons, who had five homers in the series, did not have an extra base hit on Sunday.
- SF State batted .368 (14-of-38) in the game. The Gators lead the CCAA in hitting with a .314 average. The Gators had seven strikeouts but still have the fewest strikeouts of any team in the CCAA.
- With Thaddeus Wilson a late scratch, Mitch Sancier took advantage in the DH role. He went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs.
- Jackson Kritsch went 3-for-5 with a run and a pair of RBI on Sunday. In the series, he went 7-of-17 (.411) with two runs and three RBI. Kritsch is hitting a conference-leading .431.
- SF State scored first for the first time in the series on Sunday. The first two Gators struck out but Kritsch doubled and Richie Rios singled down the right field line to score Kritsch. The Tritons answered quickly with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first. Three straight singles tied the game at 1-1.
- The Gators took the lead for good in the second. Jason Hare worked a full count and sent the eighth pitch of the AB for a home run to right center. Mitch Sancier singled, Rudy Aguilar was hit by a pitch, and Jonah Gonzales loaded the bases with one out thanks to a fielding error. Kritsch delivered again, this time with a two-out double, though Gonzales was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first.
- Sancier doubled down the left field line to begin the fourth and moved up 90 feet on Aguilar's sacrifice bunt. Sancier later scored on a Gonzales fielder's choice.
- In the fifth, Trevor Rogers walked and Hare followed with his second homer of the day, another shot to right center that extended the Gators' lead to 7-1. UCSD got the runs back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a leadoff hit by pitch and another three-single inning.
- In the eighth, the Gators added another insurance run. Salvetti led off with a double down the left field line, advanced on a Gonzales sacrifice bunt, and scored on a wild pitch.
- Riley Cleary (2-0) allowed three runs on seven hits. He threw 69 pitches in five innings of work and had one strikeout.
- Sebastian Selway pitched a scoreless sixth inning and faced one batter in the seventh.
- Mike Manley recorded a scoreless seventh inning.
- Hudson Hartley got a pair of outs in the eighth but walked the bases loaded.
- Nate Jenkins came in to get the strikeout to get out of the jam and recorded a scoreless ninth for his first save.
- Izaak Martinez (1-1) was chased after allowing four runs on five hits in three innings. Jacob Dobmeier allowed three runs in two innings. Noah Conlon came on in the sixth and gave up a run in the remaining four innings.
The Gators return home to host Cal Poly Pomona for a four-game series beginning Friday, March 6 at 2 p.m. All four games will be streamed on the CCAA Network and live stats will also be available at sfstategators.com.
