Fall 2020 Academic Honor Roll Benchmark Shattered by CCAA Student-Athletes

As the spring semester begins across the CCAA, student-athletes throughout the conference once again have set a new standard of excellence in the classroom. An impressive 478 men and women have been honored as members of the 2020 Fall Academic Honor Roll, shattering the previous best by 127.

Previously named the Fall All-Academic Team, Honor Roll distinction is given to student-athletes who are a sophomore in academic standing with a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3. The standard requirement of competing in a conference-sponsored sport has been waived for 2020-21, as honorees must be a member of their team in good standing.

"I couldn't be more proud of our student-athletes," exclaimed CCAA commissioner Mitch Cox. "Despite the disappointment and frustration they have all felt, they were able to channel their energies to their academic pursuits and really knock it out of the park. This is a testament to their commitment and to the great job their coaches have done in helping them maintain their focus on their classes."

Every institution saw remarkable increases of at least 30 percent over last year's fall honorees. Cal State East Bay leads the way with 50 Honor Roll selections, followed closely by Humboldt State (49) and Sonoma State (48). Stanislaus State (42) and San Francisco State (40) rank next, with Cal State San Bernardino right behind at 39. Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State San Marcos come in at 38, followed by Chico State (36), Cal State LA (35), Cal Poly Pomona (34) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (29). The Toros figure leapt up an incredible 81.3 percent, with the Warriors and Jacks seeing increases of at least 50 percent.

This 36.2 percent overall increase over 2019 is all the more impressive when taking into account the list represents 12 member institutions, rather than last year's 13.

Of the expansive list of 478 honorees, 163 are making a repeat appearance with 49 making the grade in each year of eligibility for the award. An impressive 135 men and women maintain a GPA of 3.8 or higher, well over a quarter of the list. Eight institutions boast double-digit numbers in this highest echelon of academic success.

By sport, women's soccer leads the way with 161 honorees, followed by 110 volleyball student-athletes. Men's soccer comes in next with 87 names on the list, with 73 women's cross country student-athletes and 47 men's cross country runners rounding out the sport-by-sport breakdown.

The CCAA recognizes individuals academically per season – fall, winter and spring – for all CCAA sponsored sports. The CCAA Fall Academic Honor Roll consists of eligible student-athletes who compete in the sports of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and volleyball. The Winter Academic Honor Roll will honor men's and women's basketball players, with the Spring Academic Honor Roll consisting of student-athletes from men's and women's golf, men's and women's track and field, softball and baseball. The remainder of the seasonal academic selections will be announced at the conclusion of the spring term after grades are finalized.
