ARCATA, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team came back from a goal down to earn a crucial CCAA victory, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Humboldt State.
- The Gators improve to 7-6-2/5-1-2 CCAA while the last-place 'jacks remain winless in conference play and fall to 3-8-4/0-6-2 CCAA.
- SF State, picked to finish last in the CCAA in the preseason coaches poll, sits just one point out of first place. No. 23 Sonoma State and seventh-place Chico State were washed out and will play on Monday morning. Cal State East Bay and SF State are tied for second place yet again after the Pioneers avoided a loss following a missed PK by visiting Cal State San Marcos and ended in a scoreless draw.
- The Gators outshot HSU 17-12, including 8-4 shots on goal.
- SF State also held a 7-2 corner kick advantage, which helped produce the game-winning goal.
Kendal Spencer gave the Lumberjacks the lead in the 30th minute with her fourth goal. The lead lasted until the second half when the Gators struck in the 49th minute.
Julia Hagedorn played a ball down the left side and fired a ball from outside the left side of the box. The ball kept carrying and landed in the right side of the net near the far post for her second goal of the season.
The Gators took the lead for good in the 76th minute.
Glory Smith took a corner from the right side and freshman
Alexa Avelar headed it in for her first career goal and the game-winner.Smith's four assists this season are tied for second-most among CCAA players.
"This was another great result. This team has character and heart," said Head Coach John DeMartini. "The players are connected and battle for each other, it's such joy to be part of this team."
Marcella Salyer made three saves and earned the victory for the Gators. She raised her save percentage to .800 while her goals against average dropped to .953. Alexis Aguilar made six saves for HSU.
The Gators host their final three matches of the season at home. Friday, October 29 is the team's Think Pink match and half of that day's ticket sales will be donated to charity. That will also be a key matchup versus Cal State East Bay. On Sunday, October 31, the Gators host Stanislaus State in a Halloween matchup.
