SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team came from behind to beat Cal Poly Pomona 2-1 to pick up the team's first CCAA victory on Sunday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
- The Gators' record moves to 3-5-1/1-0-1 CCAA while the Broncos go 0-2 on the weekend and fall to 4-4 and 0-2 in CCAA action.
- Cal Poly Pomona outshot the Gators 10-5, including 5-3 shots on goal.
- The Broncos also held a 3-1 corner kick advantage.
The only shot of the first half came in the 18th minute by SF State but AJ Tanner's shot was saved. With under two minutes to go in the half, the Gators nearly scored but the Gators failed to put the loose ball in the back of the net. CPP came out more controlled in the second half took the lead in the 53rd minute when Jessica Llamas played an arcing ball from the right side to Elise Garcia, who played the ball forward into the box. Taylor Scott narrowly beat Marcella Salyer as Salyer came out to contend the ball to give the Broncos the early edge.
The Gators answered in the 68th minute off of a free kick by Daesha Harper. She placed the ball in front of the goal box and Sydney Vidos connected for the equalizer.
SF State took the lead in the 71st minute off another free kick.
Glory Smith lined the ball up from the left side and Harper headed it in for the game-winner.
Salyer came up with a big stop in the 76th minute to preserve the lead and finished with four saves for her second win. Clarissa Sanchez allowed two goals and made a save for the Broncos.
"This was a quality win from a group of players who have been improving every single day. It's been a long process and I'm incredibly proud of each and every one of them," said Head Coach John DeMartini. "They stick together, they fight for every single ball, and for each other. I couldn't be prouder of this group for this well-deserved win."
The Gators head to Southern California for their next two matches, on Friday, October 8 at Cal State San Bernardino and on Sunday, October 10 at Cal State San Marcos.
