SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's soccer team's 2021 season came to a close on Thursday afternoon at Cox Stadium. The Gators dropped the season finale 2-0 to Sonoma State.
- The Gators were unable to make it three straight wins to finish the season. They finish with a 6-9-3/2-6-3 CCAA mark.
- With its win, Sonoma State secured the fifth seed in the 2021 CCAA Men's Soccer Tournament.
- Despite not recording a point on Thursday, Gustavo Ferrari finishes the season with 35 points, tops among all CCAA players.
- The Gators were outshot 10-7 but both teams placed four shots on goal. Ferrari attempted four shots and had two on frame.
- Sonoma State attempted three corner kicks while the Gators had one set piece.
- The Seawolves won both 2021 meetings, both by the score of 2-0.
- Seniors Erik Ornelas and Santiago Sarmiento were honored in a pregame ceremony for their commitment to the program.
After a scoreless first half and just under ten minutes into the second half, Sean Rohane netted his seventh goal of the season on a ball that snuck under Ornleas. The Seawolves doubled their lead in the 76th minute when Matt Walleigh played a ball to Brian Field, who then dished to a trailing Bryan Rosales, who finished to the bottom left.
"First, I'd like to congratulate Sonoma State and wish them all the best as they move forward into the CCAA Tournament. It was a very difficult game in very difficult conditions. We knew it was going to be a game decided on fine margins and both teams had two or three really good chances. They put theirs away and we did not." said Head Coach Pedro Osório. "I can't express enough how grateful and appreciative we are of Erik and Santi. The time and sacrifice that these two young men have put into our program and the selflessness and integrity that they carry themselves with is a bright example for our young core of players. We have a very bright future with our young squad and these two have done a tremendous job paving the way."
Ornelas played his third consecutive scoreless half but saw that streak broken by the pair of second-half goals. The senior captain made two saves, including a diving stop on a free kick in the 78th minute.
