SALT LAKE CITY — The San Francisco State men's soccer team bounced back on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over host Westminster at Dumke Field.
- It was a resilient win for the Gators (1-1) after falling late on Thursday to Northwest Nazarene in a match that suffered from a nearly 90-minute lightning delay.
- Three different Gators scored and another three made assists.
- Westminster (0-2) outshot SF State 15-9 but the Gators placed four shots on frame compared to just two by the Griffins.
- Westminster also held an 8-1 corner kick advantage. The Gators made the most of their opportunity, scoring after a subsequent scramble.
- The match was a physical one on both sides of the ball. Westminster was whistled for a staggering 20 fouls while SF State committed a dozen.
SF State shocked the Griffins when Denis Vezina passed to Julio Gonzalez Ponce for a goal on the first play of the match, less than a minute into play.
The Gators added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute off of a throw-in on the left side when
Justin Wolfe played the ball back to top of the box to
Santiago Sarmiento and the lefty drilled it in with his right foot.
In the 82nd minute, Wolfe's corner kick from the right side played into the box. The ball rattled around and
Gustavo Ferrari fired from the top of the box. His shot was deflected but the ball bounced right off of the Westminster defender and off of
London Lombana for the goal.
Jo Krumsvik got his first nod in the net and made two saves en route to the shutout victory. Noah Larkin made one save and allowed all three SF State goals.
"Tonight was just a great team win against a very tough Westminster team. We had a very tough loss to open our season and it was great to see the squad respond the way they did," said Head Coach Pedro Osório. "We showed a lot of character and heart and we look forward to using this win as a springboard for the rest of the season."
