Aaron Galef picked up a win with his major decision at 165 pounds.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The San Francisco State wrestling team and No. 15 Colorado Mesa both wrestled shorthanded but forfeits at the last three weight classes proved costly for the Gators, who fell 28-17.
The host Mavericks began the dual by forfeiting at 125 pounds.
Stefano McKinney battled at 133 pounds but eventually fell 6-2 to Collin Metzger, ranked No. 2 in the nation. The Gators' nationally-ranked wrestler,
Joshua Fuentes Norikiyo, worked a scoreless first period, then scored a pair of takedowns in the second period to earn a 5-4 victory at 141 pounds.
Basil Othman suffered a pair of takedowns in the first period and fell 7-3 at 149 pounds.
Mason Boutain continued to wrestle well and scored a major decision thanks to four takedowns.
Aaron Galef, wrestling at 165 pounds, also scored a major decision. He scored four takedowns, a reversal, and earned a point on riding time.
Kweli Hernandez-Maitre, wrestling at 174 pounds, dropped his bout by major decision, though the Gators still led 17-10. However, SF State forfeited at 184, 197, and 285, giving the edge to the Mavericks.
The Gators also wrestled a pair of extra countable matches.
Aria Mazroy, wrestling at 133 pounds, was pinned.
Marco Ruffinelli, wrestling at 149 pounds, scored a takedown and three four-point nearfalls, and earned a tech fall just 19 seconds into the second period with another takedown.

On Friday, January 20, the Gators head to Golden, Colorado for a 3 p.m. MT dual versus RV Fort Hays State, followed by a dual versus host No. 21 Colorado School of Mines at 5 p.m. MT. Both duals will be broadcast live on the
