ROHERNT PARK, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's soccer team played to its sixth tie of the season, marking a new program-high, as the Gators tied 1-1 at Sonoma State on Thursday afternoon at Seawolf Soccer Field.
- The Gators played to their most number of ties in a regular season since 1980 and to the most in program history, dating all the way back to the program's inception in 1939. That number is likely a direct impact of the rules change that eliminated overtime in 2022 regular season matches.
- The Gators (4-7-6/2-5-4 CCAA) were picked to finish ninth in the CCAA preseason coaches poll and finish tied for eighth. Meanwhile, the Seawolves (7-7-4/4-5-2 CCAA), picked to finish eighth, take the sixth and final spot in the CCAA Tournament.
- Julio Gonzalez Ponce scored his fourth goal of the season, which is second behind Gustavo Ferrari with six.
- Sonoma State held a 13-6 shot advantage but just 5-4 shots on goal advantage.
- Both teams attempted five corner kicks.
- The squads combined for 24 fouls, including five yellow cards and a red card. Notably, Bryan Gomez received his fifth yellow card and a red card later in the match, meaning he'll have to sit the Gators' first two matches of 2023. Ferrari also collected his fifth yellow card and will have to sit his first match of 2023.
After playing to a scoreless first half, the Gators took the lead in the 49th minute. Gomez passed to Gonzalez Ponce, who made a near post run and flicked it in towards the far post. The lead held until the 80th minute when Bryan Rosales saved the Seawolves' season with the equalizer.
Herrera Fuentes (3-6-5) made fours saves in his final match for the Gators. Reinier ter Riet (7-7-4) made three saves for the Seawolves.
"First and foremost, I want to give a lot of love, appreciation and gratitude towards our seniors: Danny Estrada, Justin Wolfe, Mats Risto Kippe, Manuell Kariuki, DiAngelo Gleaves, Jared MacDonald, Andres Alfaro, Pedro Zorraquin and Matias Herrera Fuentes as they finish out their careers here. They are all great young men who we will miss dearly and I to want to thank them for everything they have given to our program," said Head Coach Pedro Osório. "We are proud of how we came out and played tonight. We are on the front foot and really took it to Sonoma State tonight. We scored a beautiful goal to take the lead and unfortunately it was another situation where we gave up a late lead and had to settle for a tie. We want to use these moments as stepping stones and building blocks as we build for the future. We wish all the playoff-bound CCAA teams the best of luck as they move forward in their seasons."
